Eugene SALVATORE Obituary
SALVATORE, Eugene Michael (Mike)
August 10, 1945 - May 3, 2023
Mike passed away peacefully in Delta Hospital after post-surgical complications that included pneumonia and a heart condition on May 3, 2023.
Mike grew up in Drumheller, Alberta, attended high school there and attended Southern Alberta Polytechnic (formerly SAIT) in Calgary, Alberta where he obtained training in building construction and engineering.
His father Eugenio, (Geno) worked the coal mines initially in Crowsnest Pass and Lethbridge where he met his mother Helen and they then settled in Drumheller in the late 1920's. Growing up Mike helped his mother and father with the family's market garden which provided a source of income during the warm summer months, when the demand for coal dropped and meant that his father would be seasonally laid off.
While acting as the head lifeguard for the City of Drumheller he met the mother of Paul and Michele and were married. They moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where he would meet Barbara and remarry in 1979, the love of his life.
They resided as a family with Barb's children Natalie (Dahl), Kelly (Lowrie) Annette (Stuckey) and remained in Medicine Hat where he obtained his real estate license and worked on various property development ventures until the early 1990's when they relocated to the lower mainland, eventually settling in Ladner (Delta) where they would spend the next 30 years.
They continued to work on the family business, culminating in the construction of the Vegreville Immigration Processing Centre in Alberta and several other activities that he and Barb co-managed over the years. During this timeframe he and Barb proudly navigated the Georgia Strait as Captain and First Mate of the Midlife Crisis II, their boat that they shared with family and friends. After many years of service, they donated the Midlife II to a children's charity and turned their attention to splitting time as snowbirds in Mexico.
Their days in Mexico were some of the happiest of their lives as they always looked forward to seeing their "amigos" that they encountered either, enroute to or while at their winter home each year.
They were incredible hosts in Ladner and in Mexico, always wanting to host barbecues and pizza parties as part of holidays and family events.
Mike is survived by his children Paul (Marta), Natalie, Kelly (Daniel) and Annette (Darin); their grandchildren, Travis, Jaret and Brenna (Natalie), Brandon and Miranda (Annette) Sophi (Kelly) Vince, Noah and Kiana (Paul) and Maya (Michele). He also is survived by his great-grandsons, Aeden (Brenna) and Mattis (Travis). He is predeceased by his wife Barbara and his daughter Michele in addition to his brother Donald Salvatore and sister Marion Leslie.
Mike (and Barb) was always a dog lover / owner. From his first dog Butch, that would accompany him through the badlands while on his way fishing at a young age, to his other favorite dogs, poodles - Raz and Angie. He was a strong believer in the power of connection with his canine companions. He loved those unconditional bonds and loved to share his time with them.
A joint celebration of Mike and Barbs' lives will be scheduled in the months ahead. More information will be communicated soon. The celebration will include a live and recorded video conference option for those wishing to participate.
