George Ling Obituary
On Monday, April 25th, I received the news that my dad had passed away. I'm taking some time to process and reflect on all the good memories I have of him. He was a man of few words, and we were never really close, but that was more due to his old school British upbringing - stiff upper lip and all that. On our family camping trips when I was a kid, there was always a camera around. An old film camera with lots of yellow Kodak boxes around.
I remember digging for dinosaur bones in Alberta and finding a coyote skeleton instead. Lots of adventures each summer. Watching the Space Shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral and being in awe of the noise and smoke. Traveling around Canada and the US in our camper van that he built out. He taught me how to fish, play tennis and ride a bike.
He made the best Sunday night roast beef dinners with all the fixings, including Yorkshire puddings. When he first immigrated to Canada from England, he worked at CN Rail as a cook, travelling back and forth across Canada until he decided to plant some roots in Vancouver.
That's where he met my mom at the Jericho Tennis Club at an event or dance.
He really enjoyed spending time tending to his large gardens. We always had fresh vegetables, and I remember lots of rhubarb pies growing up. He helped me plant my own garden with zucchini, peas, potatoes and carrots. His other two favorite things were playing tennis at the Richmond Tennis Club and wine making. I can almost still catch the scent of whatever he was fermenting in the garage in those big while containers.
After he retired from work, he spent time with my mom at their home in Ladner, took her flying in small planes and travelled some. They especially enjoyed their time in Norway, Finland and back in England. In their leisure time, they walked a lot. The trails along the Fraser River were a favourite daily activity or visiting the local bird sanctuary. Trying to identify as many new birds as possible was a fun hobby for them.
I could go on, but I'll leave it there and thank you all for reading if you got this far. If you haven't spoken to your dad or mom in a while, give them a call or write them a letter. It'll do both of you good.
