Guenther MOTZEK Obituary

MOTZEK, Guenther Heinz
February 16, 1931 - September 2, 2024

With heartfelt reverence, we share the sudden passing of 'Opa' at 93 years of age. His life - rich with incredible stories overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, full with loving family and friends, blessed with creative and talented offerings and gifts - was an inspiration to everyone around him.

Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Guenther emigrated to Canada in 1951. He was reunited a year later with Linda (Gerlinda). They married in Winnipeg, then travelled to Vancouver shortly afterwards with two toddlers, and two cribs strapped on their VW Beetle rooftop. Guenther designed their home in Tsawwassen where the family was raised. 25 years later, he designed their well-known "Black Forest House" in Ocean Park.

Trained as an instrument mechanic, Guenther held several positions with CP Air and Canadian Airlines. He was a talented, self-taught craftsman who made functional and beautiful masterpieces including all kinds of furniture, a sailboat, a replica model train display depicting his hometown, carved gifts, and infinite inventions that brought ease and comfort to those he knew.

Guenther had a zest for life and learning. He made wine, tole painted, carved, played the piano, exercised and walked, solved Sudokus, and never turned his back on an opportunity that needed a perfect solution. His love of family and adventure had us skiing, camping, and playing almost every sport available. He was a pillar of support and responsibility throughout.

When asked at a luau on their 60th anniversary what the secret to their success as a couple was, Guenther responded, "Do what comes naturally". It is to this legacy that we honour his hard, meticulous work and beautiful creations. He passed on Labour Day morning peacefully… a day that fittingly celebrates workers and their immeasurable contributions.

Guenther leaves behind Linda, his wife of 72 years, sons Ralph (Christie), Peter (Candy), daughter Susi (Steve), 6 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Safe journeys Guenther! 'Danke schone' for your generous presence, loving spirit, and for who you are and always will be.
Peace be with you!!

Condolences to the Motzek family. I did not meet Guenther, but heard of him through Peter, and knowing Peter and his children, and reading this story of Guenther, it all makes sense. A child of Guenther was lucky to have such a father. We dont get to pick our parents. Slmetimes nature and the universe do the right thing. Here"s to Guenther.

We were neighbors when I was growing up in Tsawwassen. My brother, Mitch, sister Vicki and Mom and Dad were all friends of the family. I remember (Joe) always smiling. I helped him fiberglass his sailboat and remember my parents saying what talents he had.
Blessings

Many great memories of Guenther from the falcons field hockey days. He was so supportive of all the kids playing at that time, and I picture him with the whistle, referee in many games we played. Condolences to all the Motzeks, he was a fine fellow indeed.
