Hans SCHMIDT Obituary
SCHMIDT, Hans Juergen
Hans Juergen Schmidt, born on April 1, 1944, in Germany, passed away peacefully on September 27, 2024, in Vancouver, British Columbia. His second home was Sorrento, British Columbia, and his first love in Tsawwassen. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, known for his kindness and unwavering support for those around him.
Hans firstly worked for John Holmes for over 20 years, then owned and operated The Town & Country Shell, and lastly, the Tsawwassen Shell service bays. He was in his element and delight when he was engaging with his customers, helping them solve their automotive problems, and offering a listening ear. His patience and generosity were hallmarks of his personality - known to friends and family alike as the "best guy" they knew.
Hans was married to Maria Margareta Schmidt, with whom he shared a deep and loving bond. He is survived by his children, Andrew Schmidt and Heike Schmidt; his cherished grandchildren, Jessica, Adam, and Ryan Schmidt; a great-grandchild that he had just found out about; as well as his sister, Ingrid, in Germany. His family was everything to him, and he took great joy in their happiness.
The Shuswap region held a special place in his heart, though he never forgot his German roots. He was actively involved in his community, serving as President of the Sorrento Lions twice and contributing greatly to local causes. His motto, "If it aren't broke, don't mess with it," reflected his practical approach to life, while his belief that "if you have a bad day, there will be another one tomorrow" resonated with many.
Hans was a remarkable man who faced challenges with courage, including receiving a life-saving lung transplant that granted him an additional 16 years he cherished with his family. His legacy of generosity and kindness will be remembered by all who knew him, as he consistently went out of his way to help others, often those he had never met.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the community he served with such dedication.
