HARRIS, Imelda (Meldy) Lorraine February 16, 1945 - September 7, 2022 Meldy passed away quietly on September 7, 2022 at her home in Ladner, in the company of family. Meldy was a cancer survivor for the past 22 years. Every 4 or 5 years she would have to fight yet another battle with it. Meldy is survived by her husband of 24 years, Ken Farrell, her three sons, Ryan (Alisa), Dean (Lizzy), and Tyler, and grandchildren Lennie, Hughie and Hazel. Meldy was predeceased by her parents David and Lil Hewer, her first husband Hugh Harris, and her sister Carol. She is also survived by her 3 brothers Gary (Susan), David (Janet), and Joe (Karla) as well as many nieces and nephews. Meldy was known for her love of life, boundless energy, generosity and her many involvements. She had successful careers in both provincial party politics and financial services. She served on many boards of directors of both businesses and charitable foundations. She was an avid bridge player and golfer. If involved in something, she usually ended up helping to organize, and run it. Widowed at 37 years of age, she raised her three sons, Ryan, Dean and Tyler, largely on her own, before husband Ken showed up 24 years ago. We were the primary loves of her life. That is until her grandchildren, Lennie, Hughie and Hazel came along. She took it upon herself to introduce the new generation to the wonderful worlds of pasta making (and eating), baking cookies, shopping, and her candy drawer. Her pasta dinners were legendary and frequent. When asked how she survived so many occurrences of cancer, Meldy said "I followed the doctors' advice, kept active and ate all my vegetables". One of her favourite sayings was "You have to plan your work, then work your plan". Her mixed ancestry imbued her with both strong Italian emotions and passions, and the British ethic of hard work and diligence.
She will be so missed by so many. "Go rest high on that mountain. Girl your work on earth is done". We would like to extend our thanks to the wonderful staff of the Surrey Memorial Cancer Clinic who helped keep Meldy alive and thriving during her years long battle with cancer. And also, thanks to the wonderful nurses and aides of the Delta Palliative Care Unit who helped us help Meldy through these last weeks, and for helping her have the dignified passing she so deserved.
