I had the pleasure of teaching Ivor ukulele at the West Vancouver Community Centre in 2019/20. He was a curious soul motivated by learning, even into his nineties.
My favourite memory of Ivor happened while I was teaching him private ukulele lessons. The class lessons weren't enough for him, so he took private lessons from me to learn even more. He told me that he wanted to learn as much as he could, even though, in his words, "I don't buy green bananas!" He had a curiosity that lasted even into his nineties.
He told me once about his brief time in WWII. I don't think I've spoken to another WWII veteran in my adult life, and these connections will become less and less every day. It was a blessing being able to connect with him, and seeing his curiosity, kindness, and spirit.
I'll miss Ivor.

Ivor was an awesome uke player. He played a mean uke!!! He was part of our group the the West Van. Rec Center. We would meet once a week and play tunes. He loved “dark town Strutters Ball”. I want to be there when the band starts playing. Ivor you will be missed.

Ivor was a wonderful friend to me and an amazing coach. He touched so many people with his kindness and caring. A huge loss to us all.

Mr. Davies and I met in the fall of 1983. I was enrolled at WVSS. I had moved up from the U.S. and was woefully unprepared for his grade 8 math class. I tried to keep up, but decided playing the class clown was easier and more fun. That didn't go over well.... Mr. Davies gave me the boot on more than one occasion, and I deserved it. Although, there were times, as I recall, he seemed mildly amused by my spirit and defiance. I made him laugh on occasion. Then he'd kick me out..... I failed his class...no surprise there, took summer school with Mr. Ruben up at Centennial High, and came back for grade 9 only to find myself in his class....again. I think we both laughed, me, more of a nervous laugh, him, a wry smile.... I made it through...barely. I learned how to pick myself up and get to work.... I'd go on to become a multi-engine flight instructor, commercial airline Captain, and a Dalhousie Law School graduate, practicing Criminal Law at present. Mr. Davies would find that appropriate.... He was original, tough, fair, funny, and memorable..... I can count the number of people who made a lasting impression on me equal to his on one hand....God speed sir. God speed....
