Joan SMALLENBERG Obituary
SMALLENBERG, Joan Marion
June 22, 1934 - November 7, 2024
We are heartbroken as we announce the passing of Joan Smallenberg at the Delta Hospital on Thursday, November 7, 2024. Joan was born in Cranbrook and had fond memories of her childhood in Wasa, but attended school in Kimberley and graduated with her brother Frank in 1952 from Kimberley High School.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, Robert Frank and Winnifred Aikins, husband Ed Smallenberg in 2007, brother Sam in 2006 and brother Frank in 2023. Joan is survived by her sister Carole (Keith) Simpson and niece Deanna in Victoria, also niece Janice in California; her nephews and families, Doug and Senka, Kimberley and Jeffrey in Toronto; Brent in Kimberley, Derek and Chris, Kendall, Trennon and Heather in Cranbrook; and Melanie Robinson in Sechelt.
Joan moved to Vancouver when she was 17 and, through her exceptional secretarial skills and manner, worked in downtown Vancouver, finally in the Bentall Centre for many influential executives.
Joan had many skills but took the most pride in her growing of roses. She was a member of the Vancouver Rose Society for many years and won every possible category, as well as the silver trays and crystal bowls that went with the honour.
She and Ed also spent many weekends in Campbell River at The Dolphins charter fishing. And every winter for many years, it was off to Hawaii for at least four weeks, where they met up with Vancouver friends socially at beautiful Waikiki Beach.
Joan also enjoyed many trips to Europe, starting with a five-month tour of the Continent with her sister in their twenties, followed in later years with Garden Tours, the Panama Canal and Alaska with Ed.
There will be no service by request,
and Joan will be interred with her
parents in the Kimberley Cemetery.
