John LAING Obituary

LAING, John Stanley January 31, 1949 - January 9, 2022 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved husband, dad and grampa after his brief but courageous battle with cancer this past fall/winter. You don't often meet a man like John. He lived with a rare integrity, and an old-fashioned enjoyment of the simple pleasures in life and the people around him. As we grieve his passing, we are aware of the extraordinary gift that it was to know him and be loved by him and it fills our hearts with a mix of sorrow, joy, and gratitude. John was raised in Richmond, BC, living on a farm on Bridgeport Road with his parents, Arthur and Barbara Laing. He had many amusing stories of his childhood with his brother and sisters and enjoyed time together in their adult years when they skied, ran, vacationed, and talked on the phone: Joan (Bill) Brown, Jean (Gord) Moritz, Doug (Karen) Laing, and Barb (Mike) Trotter. John married his life-long partner, Laurie, in 1971. They shared a deep and committed love for one another, holding hands all their lives and until his last breath. They loved traveling in their motorhome, being active outdoors, gardening, and spending time with family. John loved and was so proud of his sons, Mike and Rob. He was also delighted to have daughters by marriage: Tara (Mike) and Angela (Rob). John's grandchildren, Gavin, Avery, Joshua, Carson, and Hayley, brought him great joy these past 16 years. He was very involved in their lives, taking them on hikes and camping trips, and watching their sport, music, and school activities. John worked for 25 years as a structural draftsperson at Kilborn Engineering and SNC Lavalin, and also as a Construction Manager at Bell Mobility. Retirement did not suit John. He needed to be active so his passion for construction and home repairs led to him starting his own business, doing small jobs for clients in Tsawwassen where he built his own home and lived for the past 23 years. He especially enjoyed the new relationships that were developed as a result. John was a fit, hard-working, and kind man who valued and cared well for his family and friends. We are forever grateful for his presence in our lives and want to thank all those who have shared their memories of him with us. They have been a comfort in this time. Thank you for making John's life, and ours, richer through the friendship you shared with him. We will be remembering John with a small family gathering. "Love is like the wind. You can't see it, but you can feel it."

We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to Laurie, Michael, Robert and their extended families. We were saddened to see his notice in the Optimist as we were unaware of his condition. We fondly remember you all as amazing neighbours for 19 years in Richmond. Our memories include early morning walks to the bus stop to get to work downtown, all the gardening advice, camping stories, fighting the various causes as a group of neighbours. I appreciated his kindness in allowing me to use his workshop tools, especially the bandsaw, for various woodworking projects, like green houses that we both built for our own gardens, and the great humour we shared during those years. Our prayers are with you as a family and we wish you comfort and peace as time goes on and that only the good memories will remain.

My heartfelt condolences to John´s family and friends. Thank you for a perfect tribute to an amazing person. I am comforted by knowing that he loved his dear family and lived his best life.

John was the best person that I ever worked with and was well liked by all. He was the epitome of positivity and integrity in every way...happy, friendly, thoughtful, kind, fit, funny, honest, hard working, resourceful and reliable...a joyful ray of sunshine and the salt of the earth.

I´ll always remember him biking to work downtown from Richmond (wow!), having fun playing softball or going out for lunch with the gang, generously surprising me with flowers or vegetables from his garden. So many good memories from a man who I was lucky to call my friend and role model.

How heartbreaking to lose such an incredible human being. How blessed we were to have had him in our lives. May his good karma and wonderful legacy live on to inspire us.

My deepest condolences to the Laing Family. I knew John from my days working with him at Kilborn Engineering. He was a great guy who taught me a lot of his knowledge in my Junior Drafting years and we shared a lot of stories about adventures camping, cycling and running the Seawall. Farewell my friend.
