Nellie van Bruchem Obituary
Nellie was born in the Netherlands to a family with four brothers and two sisters. She spent the first 25 years of her life in Amersfoort and immigrated to Canada in 1952 to marry her fiancée, Jan van Bruchem. Upon her arrival, they married, settled in Ontario and raised their two children, Garry and Audrey.
In 1972, Nellie, Jan and Audrey moved to Vancouver to establish a radio station specializing in programming for New Canadians under the call sign CJVB. When Jan retired, they were living in Tsawwassen and enjoying a more relaxed lifestyle. They travelled extensively and made annual trips to the Netherlands and Hawaii, and visited many places around the world. After 47 years of marriage, Jan passed away in 2000.
Nellie found fulfillment in helping others. Over the course of her life, she made over 100 blood donations. For 16 years, she volunteered at Kin Village in Tsawwassen. She was a member of Tsawwassen United Church, where she helped the UCW make pies for church fundraisers.
In 2012, Nellie moved to The Waterford Seniors Community and lived there for 12 years. She was able to participate in many of the activities offered, including the daily exercise programs. After a fall in January of this year, she required a higher level of care and moved to Magnolia Gardens in Langley.
Nellie is predeceased by two grandsons, Luke Jan in 1981 and Philip Gerrit in 2010. She is survived by her daughter Audrey (Peter Locke), her son Garry (Siga) and her grandson, Andrew.
She died peacefully on December 2, 2025, at the age of 98, with Audrey by her side.
