I tried to call Peter today and was stunned to learn of his death. In 2010, I served with Peter on a scientific advisory panel that became mired in controversy. Certain claims by the convening agency, and some conclusions endorsed by the panel, ultimately proved to be wrong. Although the subject matter was not a focus of Peter's interest, and though many panel members were reluctant to get involved, Peter never hesitated. He signed letters objecting to conclusions that misrepresented the data, and joined in co-authoring a paper to correct the scientific record. To Peter it was simple: if we had participated in producing bad science, we were obligated to correct it. His unflinching commitment to scientific integrity was refreshing. I feel fortunate to have had Peter as a colleague.

What a shock about Peter's death. Environmental science and namely ecotoxicology will be not the same without his enthusiasm and love for science. We miss Peter dearly and we send our deep sentiments to all his family and colleagues.

I'm sad to say, that I never had the opportunity to meet Dr. Chapman in person. But, I have several of his journal articles right here at my desk that I use all the time. We ecologists have lost a great scientist, but his work will live on. At SETAC in MN, there was a wonderful tribute "wall" to Dr. Chapman from his many friends and colleagues. To his family, I am so sorry for your loss.

Peter's enthusiasm and presence will be missed in the environmental science community. He did what many of us hope to do; have a positive influence on the world around us.

Lori and family,
Peter was a whirlwind of energy, and graced us with his presence for many productive decades in his own unique way. I worked with Peter at EVS for eight years from when I first started my career in 1995, and I learned from him the importance of doing good science and of looking after the people that you work for. EVS crystallized the careers of a significant number of environmental scientists in Canada, including a number of people that I continue to work with. Peter was a tremendous supporter of our company, Nautilus Environmental, from when we opened our laboratory in Burnaby in 2008. We worked on a number of projects with him, co-authored publications with him and his team at Golder, and enjoyed the process of developing good science with him. I will miss working with him and his enthusiasm for his family and his science. I am so sorry for your loss.

What a loss. I first met Peter in the late 1970's at the Midwest Benthological Society meetings. Over the years, we continued to interact through SETAC, and most recently in his role as a member of the US EPA's Science Advisory Board. Peter was energetic, thoughtful, and demonstrated profound respect for scientific accuracy and integrity. As difficult as his loss may be for the scientific community, I can't imagine how it impacts his family. My condolences to you all.

I was shocked by the news of Peter's passing. Our careers in environmental science tracked closely from UVic to the selenium issue in the Elk Valley. We didn't always agree everything but did agree that two scientists probably shouldn't. I very much respected his willingness to challenge conventional thinking. His contributions to science will long endure.

Peter will be greatly missed. I enjoyed seeing him, listening to his presentations, having conversations with him on various ecotoxicology topics, and most of all I will miss his enthusiasm and participation in the Canadian Ecotoxicity Workshop(formerly the Aquatic Toxicity Workshop)where his influence will live on.

Peter Chapman was a unique, enthusiastic scientist who had an incredible spirit and drive. He was always present at ATW/CEW and SETAC meetings and could usually be found in the front row at platform sessions or judging student posters. His incredible zeal for environmental science rubbed off on the many students and colleagues that had the pleasure to know him. Peter had a big role in shaping my career from my time at EVS Consultants in 1991. I always looked forward to seeing him at various environmental meetings. He will be greatly missed.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Peter's passing. From his founding of EVS through to his time at Golder and his subsequent time as an independent consultant he maintained his incredible energy, enthusiasm, and creativity. It's no wonder that he became one of Canada's preeminent toxicologists. From the time I first met Peter in the 1980s I was impressed by his ability to look at the "big picture" and his willingness to engage in lively discussion and debate in his quest to challenge conventional thinking. Peter's love of family, as well as his willingness to give of himself to students, colleagues, friends, and the community were an inspiration. Peter was truly a "force of nature" and he will be greatly missed.

Dear Lori, Jennifer, Michael, and Stefanie,
I am very sorry for your loss. Peter was always a source of inspiration, and a person who contributed so much to so many people, including myself. He will always have a very special place in my heart and will be missed greatly. My thoughts are with the Chapman family.
Azimuth Consulting Group
October 19, 2017
Half of the Azimuth team worked with Peter in their early career years at EVS Consultants. We have done our best to echo the values that Peter brought to EVS and taught us quality science, curiosity, and the importance of being accountable. Working alongside Peter as he developed his own practice opened doors to interesting and new questions. We were given responsibilities beyond our years and did our best to exceed his (high) expectations, but he was always there if we needed help. Peter was the master of synthesizing complex science and situations. Azimuth will miss his forward momentum and example of living life to the fullest. His legacy, however, is cascading to yet another generation of keen minds striving to make a difference in the world. We send our condolences to his wife, Lori, and their three children they were his greatest joys.

I was shocked to read about Peter passing. He and I go way back to when we were students getting our bachelors degree; we first met while working at the Qualicum Hatchery. Many years later, I met Peter again through the Cruisers Swim Club. Our paths also crossed in our professional lives and as neighbours. Peter was always so hard working and devoted to his children and Lori. When he was particularly busy at a swim meet I asked him why he never took breaks. He replied that he would rather be doing something to help, than sit around watching others. That was Peter - always active, always at the ready to help. He was very dedicated to whatever he took on. I am very saddened for his family that he is gone too soon.

I was very saddened to hear about Peter and the loss your family has suffered. I worked closely with Peter for many years at Golder and he was a friend, mentor, inspiration, and a truly caring person. His passion for his family was always evident and he had no shortage of stories to share. I was fortunate to have worked with him and experienced how he put his heart and soul into everything he did and his selflessness in sharing is time and knowledge with others. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I send you my deepest condolences. I cannot describe in words how deeply saddened and in shock I am by the loss that you all have encountered. I had the pleasure of working with Peter for the last two years as he was one of the members on my selection committee. He was extremely warm and funny. His sense of humor really lighten up the mood during our long days of peer review meeting. His presence will be missed.

I did not know Peter nearly as well as I'd like to have known him. In fact we were just about to publish together when he passed and I was only just starting to interact with him regularly. Beyond his prodigious legacy within SETAC and among the broader scientific community I truly appreciated Peter's candid nature, directness, efficiency and wisdom. I regret not having the opportunity to know him better as I feel I could have learned much from him, as many others have. It is always difficult to say goodbye and my heart goes out to you.

I most recently enjoyed Peter's company at a public meeting that we both attended in Cornwall, Ontario, related to the recovery of the St. Lawrence River. When one of the residents asked about benthic invertebrates, Peter jumped up with a big smile on his face to enthusiastically explain the unique biology of the worms -- no one could match his passion for that topic and he succeeded in passing along to the public that passion for the natural world. I am so sorry for your family's loss.

I met Peter at a conference in Sydney. We were both working on the ecotoxicity of Selenium and we both worked at Golder; it struck me immediately that he was a little different to most scientists- humble and very relaxed. He was great to socialise with - warm and humorous. God bless you Peter, rest in peace.

I am so sorry for your loss. I worked with Peter while I was at Golder and really enjoyed working with him. He would always bring me back magnets from his travels and I still have them on my fridge. I think of him every time I look at the magnets or when my kids ask me where I got them from.
