RUSSELL, Richard Doncaster ("Don")
"Don" Richard Doncaster Russell, born February 27, 1929, passed peacefully from this world January 31, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was an adventurer, full of curiosity
and good humour.
He is survived by his daughters Linda Jones (Michael), Morna Edmundson, Mary Joyce ("Jo") Twaites (Bob), and sister Joyce. Predeceased in 2021 by Ginny, his loving wife of 70 years. Don was a loving grandfather to Bryan, Leslie, Laurie, Julie, James, Owen and their partners, and great grandchildren Elliot and Finley.
Throughout their long life together, Don and Ginny demonstrated an exemplary respect for others through their actions and words, setting an important standard of behaviour for their family that will be their enduring legacy.
Don was a lifelong scientist and curious thinker, serving the worldwide community as a professor of geophysics for over 30 years at the University of British Columbia. He enjoyed keeping in touch with former students and colleagues from around the globe. During their long marriage, he and Ginny lived for some time on four continents. Don and Ginny joined All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner in 1991. Don will be missed by his church friends, many people around the world, and staff and residents at Augustine House in Ladner, where they moved in 2019.

Don was such a kind and gentle man. He will be missed by his church family at All Saints. Both Don and Ginny were such great examples of lives well lived and I'm grateful to have known them.

It was a pleasure to come to know Don through the UBC Association of Professors Emeriti. He was wise, friendly and collegial, a great exemplar of the wonderful people one can come to know through UBC.
