Ronald Piters Obituary
Ron passed away at home on July 6, 2016 at the age of 71. His youth was spent growing up in West Vancouver where he found the perfect place to fulfill his love of everything outdoors, including boating, fishing, skiing and scuba diving, and later in life hunting. After attaining a Master's Degree in Education, Ron spent several years in education, ultimately as a University administrator, before going to UBC for a Law Degree. He found the perfect niche practicing Maritime law wherein he combined work with his love of the ocean.
Ron was an incredibly resilient and happy person, and despite the unrelenting adversities of a chronic debilitating illness, he remained active and upbeat and devoid of self pity. He loved children despite having none of his own and his paternal aura was almost palpable and always on full display. It earned him the endearing sobriquet 'Sekuru', or grandfather, on one of his trips to Zimbabwe, when he offered help to an unfortunate villager. He retained the title with pride.
Ron also loved to converse with many distant voices using his ham radio, and made innumerable enduring friendships all over the world.
Ron was one of a kind, as tender on the inside as he was "prickly" on the outside. He will be dearly missed.
He is survived by his wife, Eileen, stepdaughter Celina, stepson Jim, his three grandchildren Michael, Alex and Brandy, his brother Kenneth, sister-in-law Susan, his niece Noeliani, his father-in-law Bert, mother-in-law Rosie, and his many close and dear friends, too numerous to list individually.
