Sheila BAKER Obituary

BAKER, Sheila
(1938 - 2024)

Sheila was born in 1938 in Sunderland, England and did her Nursing Training including Midwifery before immigrating to Canada when she was 22.

In Canada, Sheila studied at the Montréal Neurological Institute and worked at the Vancouver General Hospital before her first marriage in 1963.

Outside of her passion for nursing, Sheila was an avid skier and skied the slopes of Canada, the US, and France until her late sixties. She also played tennis competitively at a local club in Tsawwassen, was a member of the Boy Scouts of Canada, and volunteered with a Child Abuse Team for ten years.

After her first marriage ended, Sheila took the Nursing Refresher Course, left Tsawwassen, and went back to work - and loved it!

In 1989, after five years in Vancouver, Sheila met and married Bill Baker. They were together for almost 35 years.

After Sheila successfully conquered breast cancer, the two travelled all over the world. Bill taught her how to snorkel, and well-known reefs became the focus of their travels. Their most memorable trip was eight weeks in Southeast Asia, snorkeling off Phuket in the Andaman Sea, Tioman Island in the South China Sea, Bali, and Borneo.

Sheila died on February 4th, 2024 and will be missed by her friends and many of the staff at The Waterford, where she lived with her beloved husband Bill. She will also be remembered and deeply missed by her sons Chris (Susan) and Phil, and beautiful grand-daughters Jena, Chloe, and Avery.

I'm sorry I didn't see the notice until this moment- I am sooooo sorry for your loss and so grateful to have met Sheila at the Waterford (approx 2017-19) while caring for my Mom. Sheila was, for me, a beautiful ray of light/beacon of strength: positive, happy, strong, guiding, ethical character, role model.. when I especially needed her.. I remember especially.. she donned a Tilley-like hat, walking gear..and took her love of her life Bill out for an hour's walk every! single! morning.. not only was she nurturing her husband's health.. again, she was a role model for me to add her great healthy structure to my life while seeing, on my own, my Mom during her final days. She treated me so kindly, with so much warmth, God bless her. Patricia Moe

I was so very sorry to hear of Sheila's passing. I did not know her very well but she was so very kind to my dear Mum during her short stay at the Waterford. They shared a love of Nursing & Sheila 'interviewed' Mum & printed her story in the newsletter there. She would say hello to us in the hallways or dining room & always had time for a short chat. A lovely lady .
