Susan Mitchell Obituary
Susan Mitchell (née Smith) passed away peacefully on January 30 at Evergreen Baptist Care Home. She was 86 (making it to her birthday on January 19). Her children were by her side as she gently drifted away. She is survived by her daughter, Leanne (Peter); son, Trevor (Peggy); and grandchildren, Ryan (Natalie), Kyle, Gareth, and Gabrielle. She was predeceased by her husband, Brant Mitchell; sister, Alison Sclater; and remembered by her sister-in-law, Merrilee (Ev); and nieces and nephews, Karen (Mike), Jamie, André (Nicole), Elise, and Paul (Bipasha).
Susan was a kind and lovely person, a wonderful parent, and a true and loyal friend. She was always smiling, and more than happy to pitch in and help with whatever needed doing. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and held a passionate interest in all their activities and achievements.
After marrying Brant in 1964, Susan began a career in teaching before starting and raising a family. Once the kids became teens, she worked as a special education teacher in Delta and then as technical support staff at Vancouver software company, Computer Associates.
For many years, she loved long and energetic walks (often too brisk for Dad), which she did almost every weekend with our Auntie Midge, including the yearly Sun Run and two-day Weekend to End Breast Cancer in 2004. Another stalwart fixture in her life for 60 years was belonging to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic organization promoting educational opportunities for women.
After retirement, mum fulfilled a lifelong passion to travel. She and Dad travelled far and wide, including trips to Wales, Scotland, England, Italy, Spain, and Croatia. She also continued to sail with Dad on the Gerris II, navigating all the BC inland waters with him from the American San Juans to Desolation Sound.
Mum, we will miss you so much, but are comforted that you and Dad are together again.
The family will be remembering Susan's life in a private celebration.
