Susan STEWART Obituary

Sue Stewart of Tsawwassen, BC passed away of cancer on June 20, 2012. Born Susan Norman Watt in Montreal on January 2, 1961, Sue spent her teenage years in Oakville, Ontario. Beloved wife of husband Bill and loving mother of Grant, Jessica and Megan. Predeceased by her treasured father Rody Watt, Sue is survived by her mother Barbara Watt of Oakville, her brother Jaime Watt of Toronto and her sister Patti Baker of London, Ontario. Sue dearly loved her nieces and nephews and extended family. Every member of her family and her many friends are deeply saddened by Sue departing for heaven before we were ready to lose the gift that she was to us.

Graduating from Queen's University in 1983, Susan loved her chosen profession of pediatric physiotherapy. Later, she was part of the first graduating class of the online Masters in Rehabilitation Program at UBC in November 2007. Her Masters degree fueled Sue's passion for using technology in continuing education and clinical support. She developed and piloted training modules to enable electronic mentoring of pediatric clinicians throughout health regions in BC. Sue worked for 26 years at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children in Vancouver. As a Clinical Associate Professor at UBC, Sue loved teaching students each year in the normal development of children. Her main current research interest was in the effects of prenatal substance exposure on children.

Sue loved life. She took great delight in others and was unfailing in her encouragement of young people. Whether skiing or hiking, she was never happier than when in her beloved mountains. Sue was recently awarded a Diamond Jubilee Medal by the Governor General of Canada for making significant contributions to her community. Her volunteer activities were many, and in particular she loved Pioneer Pacific Camp and was a longtime volunteer and former Chair of the Board of Directors of Jacob's Well on Vancouver's downtown east side.

A reception to mark Sue's passing, including for individuals who would like to greet family members, will be held at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen on June 30, 2012 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held the same day at 4:30 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, 5350 Baillie St in Vancouver (on W. 37th Ave west of Cambie). On July 8, 2012 a reception will be held from 2:00-4:00 at the Oakville Club, 56 Water St., Oakville, Ontario.

Sue's family wishes to express our thanks to the spectacular community of friends who have provided such practical care for us over the past 8 months. We also wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff and volunteers of Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner, BC for the extraordinary care provided to Sue during her final weeks. If desired, donations may be made to Jacob's Well (www.jacobswell.ca) or the redevelopment campaign of Casey House in Toronto (www.caseyhouse.com) .

I am so sad to hear about Sue. I was one of her physio students at UBC in 2009. She was one of my favorite instructors. I am currently working in pediatrics and she has always been there to respond to my questions by email. Now, I go to look up her research on prenatal substance exposure and I find this...I'm so sorry for your loss. What an amazing woman.

Dear Bill: We are shocked and saddened to learn of Sue's illness and death, having been out of touch with you for a while. We have such happy memories of our children playing together and sharing as parents a little, visiting your homes, teaching Sunday school with Sue, and knowing of your strong involvement in such special spiritual activities. May the Lord comfort you as you go through this season.

Dear Bill:

We are saddened by your loss, and the kids' loss of a wonderful mom. We remember well our family visit to your home in summer 2004 - and in typical fashion, Sue had come back with Grant from mountain-climbing that afternoon!

After gaining the gift of your friendship in 1975 (high school), it was rejoicing in 1985 to know that you had met your soulmate in Sue. The intervening years were full of joy and laughter, and now, sorrow. Grieve only a tiny bit, knowing how positively Sue affected the lives all she knew and cared for

What a beautiful tribute to Sue - so well written. We had no idea she had been awarded a Diamond Jubilee Award from the Governor General of Canada
for community service. Truly she was a remarkable woman in all respects. She went from strength to strength fueled by God's love for her which she in turn poured out on others. Her faithful journey inspires us! Psalm 84

Sue was a remarkable person and her memory will always be with all of us. It was great to see her running to our yard a few months ago so happy to give us our tickets to Megan's skating show and to see her clapping and dancing on the balcony of her and your home when the Summer camp band was playing only weeks ago - remember - we are only steps away - our deepest sympathy to all of you.
