Wendy Perry Obituary

Wendy was born in Winkler, Manitoba, in 1955 to Harold and Joan Penner. She attended The University of Manitoba and graduated with a Bachelor of Education. In 1977, she came to Vancouver to attend a one-year course in The Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing at UBC. During this time she met her future husband, Jim. They were married in 1984 and settled in Tsawwassen where they raised their daughters, Kathryn and Jennifer. Wendy worked in the Delta School District for 40 years in an itinerant position supporting hearing-impaired children. Throughout her career, she developed many lasting relationships with both students and colleagues. After retiring in 2019, Wendy and Jim moved to Sidney on Vancouver Island.

Wendy was very creative and had many interests, including weaving, sewing, bookbinding, drawing and painting. Much of her creative energy was spent making keepsakes, for which her family will be forever grateful.

In 2018, Wendy was diagnosed with cancer. Her battle with the disease was valiant. She refused to give in and fought till the very end. Special thanks to Dr. Mitchell C.C. Liu at the BC Cancer Agency.

Wendy is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters Jennifer and Kathryn; son-in-law Andrew; cherished grandchildren Henry and Isabelle; mother Joan; and siblings Bob, Garth, Kathi and Mark. She was predeceased by her beloved father, Harold.

A memorial service will be held for Wendy at St. Andrew Anglican Church in Sidney, BC, Monday, May 16th at 1:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Agency or Wendy's favourite charity, Covenant House, in Vancouver.

I was thinking of Wendy yesterday so I searched the Internet. I was shocked when I read that she had passed. My sincere condolences to Jim, Kathryn, Jennifer & family, and to the Penner family. Wendy and I completed the Deaf Education program at UBC and then taught at the Manitoba School for the Deaf for 2 years. Wendy was a very special lady, one of a kind. I'm sorry this condolence is late but I'm sure you think of Wendy every day. She won't be forgotten.

Wendy and I were in the program at UBC together where we formed a close friendship but over the years we lost contact which is really a pity as Wendy was such a wonderful person. I'll never forget our trip to California together in 1978. Very sorry for your loss!!

My deepest sympathy to Wendy´s family. Wendy and I met through the school district many many years ago. I always enjoyed running into her either at school or in the community as we got into the best conversations. Her smile and sweet nature was such a pleasure to be around. She will be missed.

I´m so sorry to hear of Wendy´s passing. I met her when she was working with some of my high-school students who are hearing-impaired. She was so friendly, gentle, encouraging, and supportive, and it was clear she built excellent relationships with these students. She was always smiling. My thoughts and condolences to her family.
