May 14, 1958 - July 12, 2022
The family announces with sorrow his death at the age of 64 years. As per his wishes, he died at home with his loving wife Sharon and his brother and best friend Lou at his side.
Beloved husband of Sharon Bagatto. Son of the late Renzo and Paolina Bagatto. Step-father to Melanie Flake (Brad), Shaun Cunningham (Maddie), Amanda Cunningham (Rob). Cherished Nonno of Eden and Owen. Joe was the second youngest of his siblings: sister Renza (Mike Caldwell), brother Luigi (Sheridan) and sister Rossella (Giuseppe Bagnato). Sadly missed by his nephews and niece: Robert Bagatto (Angela), Robert Caldwell (Jaclyn), Renzo (Lori), Sara (Adam McConachie) and great nephews and niece Anthony, Gabriel, Lillian and James.
Joe's post-secondary education started at the University of Western Ontario where he completed a BSc. He then went on to Laurentian University where he received his MSc and Queen's University where he earned his PhD in Biology. His professional working life began in the Department of Biology at LU as an Adjunct professor. As a research scientist one of his projects was working towards the re-greening efforts in the Sudbury area on the mining tailing sites. He also taught in the Upgrading Program at Cambrian College where he met Sharon who was one of his students. He later attended teachers college at Brock University where he completed his B.Ed. In his early 40's, he and Sharon moved to Whitby where he started his career as an educator with the Durham District School Board. Over the last 21 years he has taught at Maple Ridge P.S. in Pickering, Lord Elgin P.S. in Ajax and finally Pringle Creek in Whitby. As a grade 7/8 teacher he was able to help countless students achieve success in Mathematics and Science and inspired many to pursue further education in these subjects.
After being together for over 30 years, Joe and Sharon married in 2015.
Joe will always be remembered for his kind and gentle demeanour and for the countless times he helped family with home projects. He was an amazing handyman with his attention to detail, expertise and skills in home improvement. Joe was also known to be a family oriented person. He always put his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews first and took endless joy in bringing them happiness.
The following are a few thoughts on Joey B, from his colleagues at Pringle Creek P.S.: Joe was a phenomenal teacher. His knowledge and passion for his work was unmatched. He was dedicated, passionate and always willing to take the extra time to explain a concept to both students and fellow teachers. Joe was known by students to be a fair, professional, caring and compassionate teacher and enjoyed his structure and organization. As a team member, he was always the calm, quiet and wise person that you could always depend on. The Pringle creek community will always remember him and think so fondly of him. There is a special place in heaven for people who dedicate much of their life to teaching others. May he Rest in Peace.
