Helen passed away peacefully on the morning of July 6th with her daughter Deborah at her side, under the care of the wonderful Cullen Garden staff at Fairview Lodge. Helen, mother to Yvonne, Brian, Lorraine and Deborah and grandmother to Sarah, Ian, Bryden, Cody and John, immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1954. Helen's generous heart was something to behold. She loved connecting with people - whether it was the grocery clerk at the local shop, a lonely soul sitting at the bus stop or the honeymoon couple she'd meet on a vacation who would enviably become lifelong family friends - she was happiest in the mist of a gathering, spontaneously bursting into song or getting everyone up to dance. Though trained as a printer's apprentice in Scotland, she worked in many different settings over the years. But the work she loved the most was working with severely physically and mentally challenged children. She not only lovingly cared for them, but she also gave each of them a big piece of her heart. She also enjoyed her work with the Red Cross, where she brought a little joy into the lives of all she worked for. While she contributed to her community by volunteering in the Canadian Scottish Club and Whitby Lawn Bowling, it was her volunteering with the Girl Guides of Canada that she had the most impact. As in all of her volunteer work, she always worked from the premise that a woman could do anything a man could do - and sometimes do it a little bit better. Mom, thank you for being the number one cheerleader for each of your children's chosen paths. Wherever you are, we hope that you are having a lovely cup of tea or better yet a glass of brandy, with your beloved husband Charlie, sister Theresa, son Brian and grandson Cody.
