Rita WELS Obituary

Passed away August 9, 2022, at the age of 81 at Lakeridge Gardens in Ajax. Predeceased by her loving husband Carl of 61 years. Mother to Ron (Margaret) and Derek (Laurie) and predeceased by her daughter Kathleen. Grandmother to Stephanie (Kevin and Chloe), Meghan (Andrew), Natalie (Chris), Erin (Riley), and Sarah. Sister to the late Anita Verfaillie and aunt to Corine (Chuck) and Craig (Diane) and their children Adrian (Amy), Jake (Alyssa), and Spencer and great-great-aunt to Hannah, Keira, and Cameron. Private cremation and burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery, Whitby, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Durham Region would be appreciated. Rita was born in Ypres, Belgium, and moved to Canada with her family when she was 6 years of age. She met Carl at a job on a tobacco farm and they began their courtship. They were married in 1960 and proceeded to start a family. They tragically lost their beloved daughter Kathleen at the age of 16 in 1979. Rita was proud to work as a laboratory technician at Glazier Medical Center in Oshawa until her retirement. Interests along with her husband included much family time, travelling, involvement in Marriage Encounter, gardening, playing cards, and swimming. These activities gave ample opportunity to develop many friendships through her life. Her declining health saw Rita move to Sunnycrest LTC in Whitby where new friendships with staff and residents were made. She will be fondly remembered by her family and those who she touched the hearts of along her journey of life.

Rita was a lovely woman, so kind and gentle, she faced her life´s challenges with so much grace. As a member of the staff at Glazier Medical Centre, I found it such a pleasure to have known her and worked with her. Sincere sympathy to her family.
