Sylvia Elizabeth MARTIN

MARTIN, Sylvia Elizabeth - October 29, 1921 - April 23, 2018 - Sylvia went into hospital in Cobourg on Sunday evening for the first time in decades and passed away peacefully Monday morning. Developmentally challenged from birth, Sylvia lived through huge changes in the way society welcomed and encouraged inclusion in the community for individuals like her. Predeceased by her parents, Edward Newcome Martin and Effie Hamilton Martin nearly 70 years ago, and by her brother, Ned Martin, in 2005 (Brucey 2015). Cherished aunt of Peter (Jan) and Bob Martin (Kathy). Also predeceased by her very best friend and longtime companion, Althea Ford. After moving into the Anglican Special School for Girls, later St. Hugh's House, in Port Hope at a fairly young age, Access Community Services worked together to encourage independent living at a time when Sylvia was middle aged. Sylvia (and Althea) thrived with this opportunity in their own home, shared with numerous beloved pets. She travelled, enjoyed cross-country skiing and saw so much more of the world outside. Latterly, she ended up in Extendicare Port Hope and truly treasured her weekly outings with ""the gang"". Always asking about her extended family and enjoying family visits in person and on FaceTime, Sylvia had an incredible memory for detail that went back 90+ years. We are all forever grateful for her phenomenal support, care and friendships from so many people at Access and Extendicare. Sylvia's love and happy enthusiasm will be missed by all.
