Bertha Kernel Obituary
Bertha Kernel of Virden, Manitoba passed away Monday, February 28, 2022, at West-Man Nursing Home, Virden at the age of 88 years.
Bertha was born December 30, 1933, on the farm in Routledge, Manitoba, the youngest child of three, born to Adeline & August Vanderschaeghe. She grew up on the farm and attended school in Routledge and then St. Michael's Academy in Brandon.
Bertha married Paul Kernel on April 16, 1952. They had one daughter, Suzanne. Bertha and Paul farmed in Routledge until they moved to Virden in 1973. She always had a large garden and was known for her dill pickles. She loved to bake and always had buns, a lemon pie and cookies to enjoy.
Bertha enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting. She made a lot of dishcloths and afghans and gave away many to family and friends. She loved owls and decorated her home with many owl ornaments and pictures.
Bertha worked at Stedman's Store for 30 years. She had a strong faith and was a member of the Catholic Women's League for 40 years.
Bertha is survived and will be greatly missed by her daughter Suzanne (Larry) Clark, and her granddaughter Julie Clark. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Denise Vodon and Marlene Kernel, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law George and Edna Kernel, and by her many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Paul; her granddaughter Lindsay, her parents, her sister Madeline Read, and brother Henry Vanderschaeghe.
A memorial service will be held at Carscadden Funeral Chapel, Virden Saturday, June 18, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. with Arlene Robertson officiating. Interment will be in Virden Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the service at Virden Legion Hall.
