Garnet GOODRIDGE Obituary

GOODRIDGE, Garnet Martin Howard

September 27, 1926 - January 31, 2022

Garnet will be dearly missed by his loving family - wife Virginia; his children Lisa, son-in-law Tim Young, and their two children Garrett and Mackenzie, all of Fort McMurray, Alberta; and son Gary who resides in Virden. Garnet was predeceased by his parents Clifford & Pauline Goodridge.

Garnet was born and raised in Winnipeg in the Charleswood area. He had happy memories of his school years, his friends, sports, and working as a delivery boy for Eaton's. Garnets favourite sports were hockey and baseball. He had a good pitching arm and pitched in many tournaments.

Garnet's father was born and raised on a farm near Oak Bluff. The Goodridge's had a dream of going farming when Garnet graduated from high school. The dream became reality in 1947 when they purchased the old Lord Elphinstone property at Virden. The farm hadn't been occupied for several years but the location appealed to them. Gopher Creek runs through the farm and good valley land to pasture cattle and horses and crop land. The house was structurally sound, but the rest of the buildings were in bad shape. They built a dairy farm themselves, stocked the barn with Holstein cows and some beef cattle. They got a milk contract with Modern Dairies to ship milk and they were in business.

Garnet and Virginia (McKinley) were married July 30, 1960, at St. Paul's United Church with a reception and dance at the Ranch House. The Ranch House was a busy place in those years when the Virden Teen Club was in full swing. Many former members remember those years with good memories of fellowship and good times. The Teen Club members were invited to come to our wedding dance. Roach's Orchestra were the club's favourite music and when Garnet went to pay them, they said they were pleased to do it for us. What a pleasant gesture!

We celebrated our 60th Wedding Anniversary at the farm with our closest friends - our bridesmaid, Gwen Coates (McNeill) organized the celebration for us.

Garnet and Virginia moved to Thompson, Manitoba in 1967. Garnet got work with Inco Metals where he worked in several areas but mostly in safety and training of miners in phases of their work including evacuation of mines in case of fires and rockslides. Inco supported safety training for school classes and other groups seeking CPR and first responder courses. Garnet was active in giving these classes. He was also active in the St. John Ambulance brigade as an instructor along with Doctor Rich. Garnet was nominated by Inco Metals to receive the Governor General Award. The medal was presented to him in Ottawa. He was presented medals by St. John's Ambulance for service and achievement. When we left Thompson in 1983, Garnet's title was Supervisor of Safety and Fire.

Garnet and family moved back to Hidden Valley Ranch. Lisa and Gary still in school and enjoyed life on the farm, playing sports, etc. The local ambulance volunteers asked Garnet to teach their members. Garnet accepted and for the next three to four years, he trained the volunteers and other groups, oil companies' employees. All monies raised was donated to building an ambulance garage.

On the farm was cropping the land and fencing. We re-established our upholstery business.

Garnet joined the Virden Lions Club shortly after returning to Virden. He was active in all levels of Lionism. Garnet held many offices and was District Governor in 1993-1994 for 5MB. There were approximately 19 clubs at that time to visit in Manitoba. During his visitations he visited The Pas Lions Club. They told him about recycling dead batteries. Garnet took this project back

to the Virden club and told other clubs he made his visitations to. Some of the clubs took advantage of this idea but none were as successful as the Virden Lions Club. Garnet also worked on the Lions Eye Bank that supports individuals with eye problems and transplants. Garnet was proud to be a Lion and was active to the end.

Garnet had a good life, enjoyed his family, and we were honoured to share it with him. We enjoyed camping, skiing, Caribbean cruises, visiting Disney Land, and Disney World. For our 40th Anniversary, Garnet took the family on our first cruise - but it wasn't our last.

We wish him "Happy Trails" as he continues his journey home to his maker.
