Jean Ready Obituary

READY, Jean "Elaine"

January 12, 1936 - December 24, 2021

It is with sorrow that we announce the death of our mother, Jean "Elaine" Ready. Mom passed away peacefully at Tabor Home on December 24, 2021, at the age of 85.

Mom was predeceased by her husband, Don; her parents Alexander & Myrtle Ellis; and siblings Evan, Wilfred, Les, Glen, Ethel, Verna, and Noreen. Family who remain to cherish her memory are her children: son Bert (Belinda) of Martin, South Dakota; daughter Donna (Gwen) of Ladysmith, BC; son Dale (Norma) of Morden, MB; and son Darcy (Susan) of Winnipeg, along with nine grandchildren: Ben (Laura), James (Nathalie), Randy (Holly), Ross, Paige, Richelle, Shandra, Tarina, and Owen; as well as six great-grandchildren: Ella, Ingrid, Tait, Kinsley, Ryan and Leah.

Mom was born in Reston on January 12, 1936. Growing up, she loved playing fastball, dancing, figure skating, and singing. Mom and Dad married on March 20, 1953, and their adventure began. They lived in Reston and Deloraine before moving to Brandon in 1958. The family continued to grow and the home on 5th Street gave way to our home on Leslie Bay. Mom was the quiet strength behind the scenes of the family. She was always there to make sure that we prepared for the recital or game and never missed an opportunity to support the many activities that the kids were involved in. Mom loved to knit, was an avid curler, bowler, golfer, and was always ready to watch her beloved Cloverleafs (the "Lady in the Blue Hat"). Camping was another passion for Mom, and she enjoyed many trips visiting family with Dad with Spruce Woods providing the site for an all-family gathering. Many games of Tri-Ominos and cards with the grandkids were contested over the years. Mom was also there to assist the various sporting events that were hosted in Brandon over the years, from baseball tournaments to curling events. Never one to remain idle, Mom stepped into the world of working outside the home as she enjoyed her part-time endeavours at the Dutch Mill Bakery and Woolco. After Dad's retirement, they were able to enjoy travelling with trips to California, Hawaii, Portugal, Bermuda, and Great Britain. As the kids grew and started their own families, she would drive miles and miles to attend her grandchildren's events in the United States and in Manitoba. To put it in the simplest terms - Mom was a mom.

Always the practical woman, after Dad passed away in 1997, Mom sold the home on Leslie Bay, moved into the Colonial Estate apartments, and then followed that with a move into Victoria Landing. We were fortunate to have Mom move closer to family in recent years with her moving first to Homestead South and then into Tabor Home in Morden. Family was able to visit with Mom and she continued to show her good nature and sense of humour even as her health declined.

The family would like to express our gratitude to the staff at Tabor Home for their care and kindness shown to Mom and appreciate the many kind words from friends and extended family on her passing.

Cremation has taken place and the family will celebrate Mom, Grandma and Great-Grandma's life at a family gathering at a later date. Donations in Mom's memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
