John Leask Obituary

John Gordon Leask passed away September 26, 2021, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. John was born in Virden, June 26, 1933, the second of five children. He attended Breadalbane School but ended up staying home to farm as his dad had come down with TB. He did work in the oilfield for a spell as well worked in the Macleod's store. John married Louise Murray of Decker, MB July 27, 1963. They raised three children: Jim, Karen and Gregg.

While farming, John was councillor of Woodworth Municipality for 16 years. He served on the Virden Hospital Board and the Westman Board throughout these years. He served on the Pool Elevator Board at Lenore, as well as six years on the Rivers Seed Plant Board. He also sold stock and horse trailers for Wylee Manufacturing from North Battleford while Karen and Gregg were in Pony Club. After taking part in curling in both Lenore and Virden, he took up dancing. We would travel from Carman where we danced for eight hours to Round Lake, Sask, and many places in between. It was in November, 2009, that we moved to Virden and Gregg and Sarah moved to the farm.

John enjoyed travelling and we were able to travel to England twice to visit his brother and family. While there we made a trip on the side to Belgium and France, and the second time to Aberdeen and Wales. We had a family trip to Disney World in Florida. A trip to Cuba one winter was very much enjoyed.

John enjoyed celebrations. One being the 100th Anniversary of the farm in 1982. A dance was held in the shed with a live band. A tea was held the next day in the shed following a church service at Breadalbane church. A dance with a live band was held in Virden for our 40th Anniversary and a tea held for our 50th.

John was predeceased by his daughter, Karen, parents Jack and Lulu Leask, his parents-in-law Harvey and Mary Murray, his brother Garth, his sister Dorothy. and his sisters -in- law Marlene, Sylvia and Irene. His older brother, George, survived him by a week. He is survived by his wife, Louise. Sons Jim and family Alexa and Austin; Gregg (Sarah) and family Anna, Asher and Hayden. Brother Ed (Suzanne). Brothers-in-law Don Murray (Rose) and Gordon Newell (Rose). Sister -in-law Sheila. Several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service was held in the Royal Canadian Legion on August 10, 2022 with Elsie Dickenson officiating. Eulogy was given by Alexa Leask and Ed Leask. Music was supplied by Karen Leask and Robert Sprague singing 'Georgian Bay' and Karen Leask singing 'The Sparrow' by video. 'Can I Have This Dance' by Anne Murray closed the service. Lunch was supplied by the Legion Ladies.
