Lois KENDERDINE Obituary
KENDERDINE, Lois WINONA
May 14, 1924 - January 25, 2022
Winona passed away peacefully at the West-Man Nursing Home in Virden, Manitoba, in her 98th year.
Winona was born in Antler, Saskatchewan, the daughter of Herbert and Eva Koeckeritz, the fourth child of a family of nine. The family moved to Ebor, Manitoba in 1938. In 1951 she moved to Virden, Manitoba and started her employment as a telephone operator for MTS. She thoroughly enjoyed the friendships made during this time, and always spoke of those fond memories of her early days with those ladies.
She married R. Ellsworth Kenderdine in 1957, and they moved to the 'big brick house' on the edge of town. It was here they raised their family. It was a gathering place for many - both family and friends. Mom enjoyed gardening and took great pride in her Gladiolas, taking home some ribbons from the local AG shows. Winona was a lifetime member of the Virden Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Virden Art Club, Virden Community Band Board, and the MTS Virden operators. You could always find a dish of salted cucumbers on her table in the summer, and since she loved picking berries, there was always a variety of wild berries in her fridge which was fondly served over ice cream to all who visited.
Many large gatherings and meals were held at her 20ft dining room table, with kid's tables set up in the living room. Card games followed and went late into the evenings. Adults and kids were treated the same, "spoken with like you mattered". On a regular basis she welcomed anyone to join her kitchen table. As a dear friend of 70 years said, "Win could make a meal out of a plate of balloons".
Coming from a large family, she always looked forward to an old-fashioned Family Reunion to re-connect with relatives. She was very proud of her Irish heritage and St. Patrick's Day was her favourite holiday (she once took a trip across the pond to Ireland and made the trek over difficult terrain and stairs to kiss the Blarney Stone)
She was independent and a bit stubborn at times, yet also able to accept physical help when necessary. Winona contracted Polio at a young age but never let it deter her spirit or define her. The only thing to slow her down was her individual recovery times after each hip replacement surgery (a total of five). 'Always do the Physio and prescribed exercises' was her motto.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son Rick, daughter Janine Jacobson (Terry), and daughter Mona (Mark Prescott). Grandchildren Dalton (Lindsay), Quinn, Tara (Trent Nield), Hunter Jacobson, Alex Kenderdine-Armstrong, and Nick Prescott (Sarah). Great-grandchildren Yardleigh, Dax, Jovie, Carissa, Oakley and Finnley.
Winona was predeceased by her husband Ellsworth, daughter-in-law Vivian, and grandson Wyatt.
