Peter Nissen Obituary
Brian Peter, formerly of Virden, passed away at the age of 63 on July 6, 2022, at Brandon Regional Health Centre. Peter was predeceased by his Parents, Kurt & Daisy Nissen. He is survived by his wife Dana Austin, and his children, Katrina, Breann, Kurt (Ana), Kayla (Garth), and Josh. His grandchildren; Vada, Liam, Madeline, Zane, and Raina. Peter is also survived by his siblings, Blaine, Kyle, Bonnie, Tamara, and their families. As well as his Aunts, Uncles and cousins in Denmark and in Canada.
Peter attended School in Virden, going to Goulter, Virden Junior High and Virden Collegiate. During his high school years, he attended Neelin High School and graduated from Hartney Collegiate. Peter always loved to learn, always encouraging others that education was important. In May 2010 Peter took great pride in successfully completing his Red Seal in Carpentry.
Peter had many passions in life, his family, education, work, politics, community and helping others. He was a loving, caring, humble, and hardworking man. Always putting the needs of others first.
Nothing was more important than Family. Peter absolutely loved his family, not only his wife and children; he also loved his siblings, their children, his Aunts, Uncles and cousins. The family was not only by blood but by those who made an impact on his life and became family. He loved to get together for family suppers or to just have a coffee and visit. Always keeping up on what everyone was doing.
He was a storyteller and often left people second-guessing if the story was real or not. Peter was an intellect; he had a wealth of knowledge, and often shared his views, never shying away from a good debate. He also took a keen interest in family genealogy and history, even on his deathbed he was sharing stories with our cousins so they would know and carry those stories on.
Peter lived a full life; he had a passion for giving and helping others. He may not have had the riches of the world but that never stopped him from helping out others and giving back. When the big floods happened in Brandon and Souris, Peter was there, sandbagging, helping friends save their homes and businesses, and helping communities save their towns. Along with his wife, Peter managed the East End Community Centre, starting a lend-a-skate program so everyone had the opportunity to skate, hosting movie nights and dances so the children in the East End had something to do. He helped spearhead a community garden, dedicating beds to grow fresh vegetables for Samaritan House Ministries.
After the loss of our Dad, Peter changed his life and became involved in Children's Church Ministries at both Calvary Temple and Bethel, working on bus ministry. He wanted to make sure the children had a start to a good foundation in life. When Peter moved to Calgary he was actively involved with the Jubilee Christian Centre. Always giving back.
There will be a graveside memorial service to honour the life of Peter. It will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 11:00 am at the Dowan family cemetery (formerly Reserve Fellowship Chapel), Sioux Valley Dakota Nation.
