Christopher GRAY Obituary

Aged 84, Professor Emeritus, University of Guelph, died suddenly on December 15th in Oakville, Ontario. Chris was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Virginia (Beatty) Gray, and his parents, Dr. Kenneth Gray and Honor (Tett) Gray. He is survived by his brothers Douglas (Maureen Callahan) and John (Ruth); nieces Julia (Michael Hodge), Caroline (Rob Williams), and Catherine (Nantha Kumar); and nephew Chris Gray. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Susan Fowlie (George), niece Meredith (Duncan Callaway) and nephew Jonathan (Jaime).

In his professional life, Chris was an accomplished academic who loved knowledge and learning. In 1990, he was elected a Member of the Royal Society of Canada. A theoretical physicist, he was engaged in research, writing and publishing up to the time of his death. Those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him mourn his loss as a person, a loving and deeply loved family member, professional colleague, and profoundly loyal friend. There was nothing Chris enjoyed more than engaging in a discussion and exploring ideas ranging from physics problems to the follies and failings of our elected officials - unless it was a spirited game of Liar's Dice with his brothers and extended family members. Chris was genuinely interested in everyone he met and always eager to engage in conversation about the interests and activities of others. A talented athlete in his youth, Chris was deeply interested in sports and followed the fortunes of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Maple Leafs, and the Toronto Raptors. He was a deeply kind and gentle man, devoted to his dog, Gordy, and Gordy's predecessors Emily, Vivien, Ben, Max, Brinka and Mieka. As one of his dear friends commented, he died too soon - he had more to do and more books to read. He will be sorely missed.

A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2023, following interment in the Tett family cemetery in Newboro, Ontario. Details will be announced later.

Such a loss for the world of physics and science! Such a loss for this world!
Dr.Gray was my PhD advisor. I got my degree early 2015 and since then we have been exchanging emails . The last reply I have received from him was on his Birthday Sep 6th (I always messaged him for his Birthday). He has been one of the most significant people in my life who also encouraged me to be the best I can be. His passion for learning was exceptional. He was a great mentor, a brilliant scientist and an amazing human being. He was kind and patient. I enjoyed every minute of the time we worked together solving the thermodynamics equations of my thesis.

I am so sorry to hear of Chris' passing. He had such a passion for life. He was a great mentor during my Ph. D.. I am sure he had a few more good papers left in him. His academic legacy will carry on in the many young scientists he has helped.
