Joan was born in Manitoba before the Burgess clan relocated to Guelph and opened the W.H. Burgess Bakery. After the bakery was sold the family moved to Arkell and Joan's first job was at the Royal Bank in Rockwood where she met her future husband Bob. Joan raised her four boys in the village of Rockwood where she helped Bob run Root Hardware. She was instrumental in the expansion of Root Home Centre to Guelph where it thrived at the corner of Woolwich and Speedvale for years.
Dearest to Joan was her family. She was never happier than at family gatherings surrounded by her husband, four boys, grandchildren, and extended family in her home or at the cottage. She masterfully prepared for these occasions, ensuring that everything was in place. She always loved and supported her sons even at those times when they didn't make it easy. As her health declined, it was still important for her to stay connected to family and friends, managing to send out her Christmas cards, just prior to passing, with the help of her niece, Bonnie. She fought the good fight until the end and is dearly missed by all who knew her. We mourn her passing but celebrate a long and fruitful life.
Joan was a longtime resident of the Elliott Community in Guelph and the family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Nottingham for the love and care they gave Joan.
