Kaj PINDAL Obituary

PINDAL, Kaj Gøtszche Petersen December 1, 1927 - June 27, 2019 We are deeply saddened to announce that Kaj Pindal passed away on June 27, 2019 at the Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. Loving husband to Annie, and father to Lars, Jens (Sandy), Kristina (Eugene), Kaj was also an artist, cartoonist, storyteller, animator, filmmaker, writer, teacher, mentor and friend. Born in Copenhagen, the son of an artist, Kaj began his career as an underground cartoonist during the German occupation of Denmark. After World War Two, as a self-taught animator, he began to make animated commercials in Sweden and at Denmark's Nordisk Film. In 1957 Kaj and his wife, Annie, immigrated to Canada where he was invited to join the prestigious National Film Board of Canada. His many films made at the NFB include THE PEEP SHOW, I KNOW AN OLD LADY WHO SWALLOWED A FLY, WHAT ON EARTH! (which was nominated of an Oscar), WHERE THERE'S SMOKE, HORSING AROUND, KING SIZE, and PEEP AND THE BIG WIDE WORLD which was subsequently made into the award-winning animated television series. Starting in the mid-seventies, along with making more animated films, Kaj also taught and lectured in Denmark, Sweden and at Oakville's Sheridan College where he will be greatly missed by the many young animators who had the privilege of knowing him. Kaj's quiet wisdom, sense of humour, childlike enthusiasm and generosity will be fondly remembered by all his friends around the world.... especially all those kids, young and old, who had the chance to have a ride on his backyard trolley. The family would like to thank everyone at the Oakville and Burlington hospitals and at the Park Avenue Manor Retirement Residence, for all the care and comfort they provided to Kaj during the last few months. At Kaj's request, there will be no funeral. ""Now go have some fun!"" KP
