Nancy Bliss Obituary

Suddenly and peacefully after her daily exercise, March 11, 2022. Nancy was born May 26, 1955 in Hamilton, and grew up in Burlington, ON. Nancy joins her mother, Marion (2020) sister, Mary Sue (2016) and father, Malcom (2006). Survived by beloved husband Brian, children Brandon, Matthew (Caroline), Alana and Dallas. Much loved Grammy to Zack and Vince. Sister to Austin, Malcom (Deborah), David (Lesley) and Ian. Sister-in-law to John (Linda) Bliss, Elizabeth Bliss, Brenda Cooling (Jamie) and Paul Rycroft. Auntie and great-auntie to many beloved nieces and nephews. Special lifelong friend to Dekyi Lee Oldershaw.

A lifelong paddler, her focus shifted from being a national-level athlete with Mohawk Canoe Club, to the flora and fauna of the riverbanks. With an intuitive knack for design and people, she took fashion and retail sales at Sheridan College. She loved working with people-her interactions were imbued with positive energy and light-and people in-turn loved her.

Nancy was part of a community of Tom Thompson mums that were actively involved in their children's education. She was a natural healer. Her healing hands and kindness brought relief to people's suffering. Even the plants responded, and it showed in all the gardens she nurtured. She cared deeply about all of those around her, and her sensitivity and thoughtfulness showed in every small gesture, blessing everyone she touched.

Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on March 18, 2022 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. where a Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, March 19 at 10 a.m. with a reception to follow. I "grew up" during my summers paddling for Mohawk and looked up to the generation ahead of me. So many were influential on my life then...and now. Nancy was one of those special people that you cross paths with in one's lifetime--one among so many--Brian, John, Doug, Brent only to name a few. She made all of those around her better. A beautiful and wonderful person. She will not be forgotten. My sincere condolences to Brian and all of her family.

The Mohawk Canoe Club years formed values that shaped many of our lives. Nancy, Brian, John, Lee, Brent, Doug and a long list of inspirational characters had a huge influence on us. Nancy in particular helped keep us stay safe, inspired and collegial in our early teens. Those learnings from those mentors has had a life long impact on me. So sad to lose one of them.

Please accept our deepest sympathies at this difficult time. I met Nancy around 1974/75 at the Mohawk Canoe Club. I remember her positivity and energy as being constant. Nancy was very generous with her time and efforts. I can not think of the canoe club without thinking of the great people I met and paddled with. Nancy was one of them. Rest In Peace and I hope the water is flat and the winds calm while you paddle in the blue yonder.
