Richard Laughton Obituary

A cherished husband, father, and grandfather taken from us too soon. Richard's illness was brief but intense. He never stopped fighting, spurred by his unwavering love and devotion to his family. Richard was a devoted father to four daughters (including triplets!), Melissa, Tessa, Jennifer and Edwyna. Proud grandfather of Evan and Cole (twins) and Sophie and Riley (more twins!). His love for his wife of 44 years, Olga, never faltered. After selling his business, Pollutech Group of Companies, and "retiring" at the age of 51, Richard went on to help his daughter, Tessa, in her business, Laughton Training and Sales (LTS), and loved every minute of being a horse "Farmer". He took great pleasure in being at the farm, especially driving his tractor! Another major part of Richard's retirement was spent locating lost soldiers from WW1. It was truly a passion for him and he derived immense satisfaction from his many successes (as did their families). A Funeral Service was held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at the McKersie-Kocher Funeral Home. A Celebration of Richard's Life will be held soon at the farm. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in his memory be made to either Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation or the Milton District Hospital. Letters of condolence, shared stories and memorial donations may be left for the family online at www.mckersie-kocher.ca Heaven has gained an angel and we do not walk alone.

Richard helped me find my grandfather’s records and answered innumerable questions regarding his Great War service. He continued to answered questions that popped up while transcribing his letters for years with great patience. I will always be in Richard’s debt. I am so sorry for your loss.

I am sorry to hear of Richards passing .

In the language of the trenches, Richard has "Gone West" and he will be greatly missed.

I never had the pleasure to meet Richard in person but I got to know him through the CEFSG forum and especially over the last few years as he helped me and the 15th Battalion CEF Memorial Project so much.

He was a terrific mentor, always ready to help and share his knowledge and skills with me personally as well as our other Project Team researchers - as he did for many others on this forum and beyond.

This was especially true when it came to working on cases of 15th Battalion Unknowns where in essence he was leading and guiding our Team - with very successful results.

I only knew Richard through our online correspondence. Many years ago he engaged me to carry out some WW1 research for him and we have been in frequent touch ever since. His passing comes as a terrible surprise. Please accept my sincere condolences on your loss. Chris Baker at fourteeneighteen|research in the United Kingdom.

I would like to extend my condolences to his family. Richard frequently helped me with my First World War questions! There have been many tributes to him on the CEF Study Group and Great War Forum. He will be remembered for his excellent work in finding the Missing of the Great War!

I am so saddened by this news. Living in Australia, we shared an interest in WW1 history and I read his posts with interest and had occasional private message contact with Richard. I always admired the passion behind everything he wrote, accompanied by the most thorough & meticulous research. His White Cross Atlas publication (of WW1 original burial locations) stands as a monument to his work as does his research into identifying unknown soldiers.

Always full of fun, kind and generous. His sense of humor made the long show days go fast especially at Sam and Ellas. Such a lucky family to share him with all of us. Wish we could be there and give you hugs, our thoughts are with you mom and all the family. We miss him and the good old days. With much love, wish we could come to the service but understand due to covid etc. Lilian Foster
