Rose Turnbull-Maurice Obituary

On January 31, peacefully in her home, Roma passed away after a brief illness. Predeceased by her beloved husband Michael, Roma leaves her daughter Sarah (Sarah), son David (Becky), and her grandchildren Laura and Jack. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Roma studied to be a teacher and moved to Montreal for her first teaching job in the early 60s. After a year, Roma returned to Scotland where she married her first husband, Jim. The two returned to Canada, this time to Ontario, where they settled in Toronto. Here Roma began her long career as an elementary school teacher with the Separate School Board. She taught every grade, finally moving into the position of guidance counsellor. During this time, she obtained her degree in history from York University. After Jim passed away, Roma met her second husband, Michael, to whom she was married for 37 years. They bought a home in the Bronte area of Oakville in 1981. Both were lucky enough to retire quite early, and enjoyed many hobbies and activities in their retirement. They were avid members of the Oakville lawn bowling club. Roma also volunteered at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital for many years. They travelled the world together and enjoyed rustic adventures. They made an effort to go to Scotland each year to spend time with Roma's lifelong friends. Roma enjoyed gardening, jeopardy, and doing aquafit at the local YMCA. She was a voracious reader and was at the Woodside library weekly. After Michael passed away in 2018, Roma joined a walking group where she met many close friends. She was an incredibly intelligent and generous woman with a huge heart. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the Nurse Next Door for their wonderful care during her illness. In lieu of flowers, please support the Oakville Public Library.

I am sorry to learn Mrs. Turnbull passed away. I was a student in her Grade 5 and 7 classes at St. Ambrose.

She had a very dry and witty sense of humour. She was also tough, but fair and kind. My fondest memory of her was reading to the class the Booky series (Bernice Thurman-Hunter) at the end of the day.

My condolences to her family. We miss you, Mrs. T!

I was saddened to hear of Roma's passing. Roma was an amazing neighbour and always stopped to talk with my Dad who lived a few doors down the street. We also had a very unique connection to Roma and Michael as we lived in their home before we sold it in 1980. My sincerest condolences on loss.

I had Mrs. Turnbull as a teacher at St. Timothy's Catholic School in the late 1970's. She was one of my favourite teachers and I often thought of her through the years. My condolences to her family.

I was so sad when I heard the news of Roma passing away. Roma has been a very special person in my life since I was a baby. She was a very special friend of my late mum and dad, Jim and
Joan Hutchison. She was a kind person and had a great sense of humour and laugh. I realise how wonderful it was to see her last year when she was visiting over here in Scotland. She never forgot to send me a birthday card in 57 years!! , I will miss her and her reassuring emails she sent to me recently, love Louise, Mark and Christopher Douglas xx

This a wonderful tribute to Roma. She was a wonderful neighbour, we always enjoyed having a chat with her and Michael (and the odd beer on our driveway). They always had great stories to share about their adventures. Roma was a very creative person she made wonderful cards that we really enjoyed receiving over the years. Thank you Roma, you will be missed.

What a beautiful tribute to a lovely lady. While I didn´t know Roma personally, I heard about how special she was from her daughter. Sarah is a wonderful person inside and out and I know how close she was to her Mom. My condolences to the entire family. Hold your memories of this beautiful angel close to your hearts.
