Athanasios NEZIS Obituary

February 8, 1943 - May 4, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Athanasios (Tom) Nezis on May 4, 2022 at the Carleton Place Hospital. He was at peace, surrounded by his loved ones. Devoted husband of 40 years to Stavroula (Roula). Beloved father of George. Cherished younger brother of Kyriakos (Katina), Eleni (Nikos) and Elisabeth. Predeceased by his brother Lyberis. Dear son-in-law to Dina (Antonios). Loyal brother-in-law to Kostas (Jenny), Apostolis and
Vasiliky. Loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews in both Greece and Canada. Tom was born to Athanasios and Kyriaki in Zerbisia, Greece during a turbulent time in the
country's history. Having lost his father before he was born, he grew up surrounded by the love of his siblings and his mother, and thanks to her, was instilled with a strong work ethic and remarkable resilience that he brought to everything he did. A cook for many years at various
restaurants, he was never happier than when he could show off his skills at our many family gatherings. Cooking for his family was his way of showing love. As with many immigrants, Tom came to Canada seeking a better life, but it was on a trip back to Greece in 1981
that he met and married the love of his life and, shortly after, welcomed his beloved son who became the most important part of his life. Tom experienced many tragedies and hardships in his life but always looked at each new day with positivity. A man of few words, he will be lovingly remembered for always saying things were, "The best," a sentiment that embodies who he was and what he meant to everyone who knew him. Tom's family wish to thank all the amazing paramedics, nurses and doctors at the Carleton Place Hospital for the excellent treatment they provided for him. As Tom's health declined in recent years, he was frequently placed under their incredible care. The compassion and support they gave not only to Tom but to his family will forever be remembered. Truly, they are heroes.
Family and friends have paid their respects at the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home, 19 McArthur Avenue, Carleton Place on Friday, May 6, 2022 from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. A small service led by Father Alex Michalopoulos took place in the chapel followed by a procession to bring him to his final resting place. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Carleton Place Hospital or The Dormition of the Virgin Mary GreekOrthodox Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Alan R. Barker Funeral Home in Carleton Place.
