Barbara Eileen Lough

January 23, 1932 - April 7, 2023

It is with profound sadness that the family announces Barbara passed at home peacefully at sunrise on Good Friday, surrounded by her family. Barbara Eileen Lough, age 91, was predeceased by her loving husband Sam in 2003, after almost 50 years of marriage. Her memory will be cherished by her five children: Chuck (Sandy), Chris (Jill), Peter (Monica), Greg (Kim), and Rebecca. She was a wonderful grandmother to Erin, Jeffrey, Kevin, Kelsey, Jennifer, Brent, Blake, Alexis, Connor, Ainsley, and Meghan. Great grandmother to Timothy, Arwen, Wesley, Addison, and Hayden. She is predeceased by her sisters Joyce and Betty, and is survived by her youngest sister, Nancy, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was born in Ottawa to James (Buster) and Mary Stoate. Barb attended Lisgar Collegiate and was a proud graduate of the Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing ('53). She was a devoted labour and delivery nurse post-graduation. After raising her family, she re-entered the nursing profession in Saint John, NB. When the family relocated to Carleton Place in 1983, Barbara was instrumental in operating and managing the family business, Lanark Cedar, and became an active volunteer at the Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital, the curling club, and her church, Zion Memorial. Barb loved her summers and weekends at "the camp" on Dam Lake in the Gatineau Hills. Many special memories will be cherished of her leading campfire songs, tending to her beautiful flower beds, taking long swims, and cooking up wonderful meals. Barbara had many interests and hobbies. She was a talented seamstress, often making clothes including graduation gowns, costumes, and knitted sweaters. One of the most cherished items being handmade Christmas stockings. Barbara had a beautiful singing voice and was very involved with church choirs wherever the family lived. In Carleton Place, she also sang with the Mississippi Muds and The Town Singers. Barb was a long-time curler and was instrumental in organizing draws and bonspiels in the area. She enjoyed spending time playing bridge with friends or chatting with her Bennett Gates neighbours. She was an avid traveller as well, often accompanied by her beloved sister, Nancy. Barbara's life was one of service and devotion to her faith, her family, and her community. A woman full of grace and class, she could always be counted on to offer support and encouragement to those in need, and to celebrate the successes of the people in her life. She was the centre of our family - our rock. Barbara's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Maria Bastin-Millar, Dr. Arleigh McCurdy, and the oncology team at the Ottawa General, as well as Stephanie and the entire palliative care team.
