Douglas FORGIE Obituary

December 12, 1927 - January 27, 2023

Doug was born on December 12, 1927, in Renfrew, Ontario, the son of John and Nellie Forgie. Doug was the youngest of five children, having since survived Helen, Kerry, Jean, and Jim. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Growing up in Renfrew he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Marion Matthews (d 2000). With their three children David (Glenda), Adele (Reg), and Andrea (Mike), they embarked on an amazing journey of work, travel, and family life. In 1951 Doug began a career with LIUNA (Laborers' International Union of North America) working for Locals 1250, 1208, and 755, and retiring in 1988 as Canadian Director of Research and Services. Doug loved to read widely, watch TV, and discuss world events with his long-time friend, Don Gregory. He took great pleasure throughout his life, enjoying the rustic warmth of the Forgie family cottage out at Round Lake, which his father began building as a legacy for his children and further descendants, in the 1930s. It was there he could while away the hours with his wife, children, and later grandchildren, in the embrace of nature and his family's tradition. In addition to Doug's children, he will be sadly missed by his cherished grandchildren Kristan, Trevor, Michael, Davianne, Fletcher, Matthew, Kenny, Eric, Melissa and Luke. Numerous great-grandchildren in Canada, Trinidad, and New Zealand will also fondly remember him. Of course, there are many relatives and extended family, including nieces and nephews in the Renfrew, Carleton Place, Almonte, and the Orleans area that will miss his presence at Round Lake. Doug will be remembered as a classy and charismatic gentleman who was well liked by all who met him. He had a great sense of humour, a warm smile, and gleeful laugh that once filled the room and now lives on in our hearts. Doug was a fine example of a life well-lived. He passed away in Ottawa, Ontario, after a brief illness. He was 95. Arrangements entrusted to Capital Funeral Home and Cemetery, 3700 Prince of Wales Dr., Nepean. A service will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favourite charity.

We lost a nice neighbour. He will be missed by all his family, friends and neighbours in Park Place.

I'm so sad to have lost one of the best neighbours I could ever have wished for. I met Doug shortly after I moved here 20 years ago and in all that time he never failed to put a smile on my face. A true gentleman (I know you're going to be hearing that a lot) with a lovely smile and a kind word for everyone, and so interesting. After a long haul with the isolation COVID imposed on everyone I was delighted to run into Doug a month or so ago, and now I'm happy I did. It's a rare treat to get to know someone like Doug and I'm happy I had the opportunity.

I will miss him a lot.

My deepest condolences to the family.

When I moved to Park Place Doug was the first person to welcome me to the building. We had coffee that day together and countless cups after that. He was a gentleman, a friend, and a truly good person. I will miss him.

Such a special gentleman and great neighbour always cheerful and greeted we his friends at Park Place with a smile and warm greetings. I´ve known Doug for more than 27 years and I will miss him and his many appearances in his kilt.

As long time neighbours of Doug this is very sad news indeed. As Don and I moved in in 1983 we knew him forever. He and I were on one of the first versions of a Security Committee, which included floor monitors, decades before 'committees' appeared.

He eventually moved to the 11th where my
Mother resided for a number of years. He was attentive to her, Peggy and Trudy (the seniors)
on that floor.

But mostly I will remember his building friendships and regular visits to Tim's.
