John Lumsden Obituary

Dr. John Howard ("Tim") Lumsden passed away peacefully on April 18, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family. Tim was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario on December 14, 1937 to father Herbert Allan Lumsden and mother Kathleen Lumsden (née Attaway). Tim was the beloved husband of Marilyn (née Sanderson). Dear father of John (Chris) of Elora, Leslie (Bart) of Lombardy & Ray (Brenda) of London. Loved grandfather of Jamie, Jasmine, Genevieve, Kathleen, Erika, Graham and Lizzy. Brother of Ron (Shirley) Lumsden of Lombardy, Bill (Linda) Lumsden of Brockville, the late Shirley (Wayne) Convey, and the late Pat (Doug) Beattie, Sheila Doyle of Smiths Falls, Sharon (Arlon) Popkey of Guelph, and Ray (Linda) Lumsden of Brockville. Also adored by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The importance of family was exemplified by his diligent research of the Lumsden clan genealogy. Tim's lifelong love of learning led him from a one-room schoolhouse at Nolan's Corner to the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph where he graduated in 1960. He joined the Brooklin Animal Hospital but his urge to learn saw him return to OVC in 1969 for a graduate degree in veterinary clinical pathology. In 1971 was hired as an Assistant Professor and the following year obtained his board certification from the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology. He retired as a Professor in 2002 having enthusiastically taught several thousand of Canada's veterinarians the importance of clinical pathology. He received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the International Society for Animal Clinical Biochemistry in 2004 and from the ASVCP in 2009. Tim wanted to express his profound gratitude to those who helped him through his health challenges in recent years: specifically, Dr. Elizabeth Tullis and her team at St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto; his personal support worker Dorde Perisic; and his sister Sharon Popkey. Cremation has taken place, however, in light of Covid-19 plans for a celebration of life are delayed. In lieu of flowers or other donations, contributions can be made by cheque to the SMH Foundation attention Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic (Dr. Elizabeth Tullis) or online at http://smh.convio.net/site/TR?fr_id=1682&pg=entry. Dr. Tullis helped Tim breathe easier, and he would like to support her work to help others do the same.
