Jonathan Sobieralski Obituary

On February 14, 2022, Jonathan Sobieralski of White Lake, Ontario passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 71 years.
He will be forever missed and remembered by his wife of 47 years, Sharon (Miller), his two daughters Angela and Paula, his son-in-law Mike, his two adored (and spoiled) granddaughters Olivia and Vera, his siblings Lidia, Allan, and Selina, and his step-mother Frances. He will also be missed by many extended members of the Sobieralski and Miller families and by countless friends across Canada and the US.
Jonathan, or Jonny as he was often called, was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1951 and moved with the family to Canada in 1967. Jonny got bored in the small town outside London, ON and sought what would be a 34 year career in the Canadian Air Force. He retired at 51, with the rank of Major, an accomplishment that made his Dad, Ted, very proud. Jon and his girls traveled as far as Germany and throughout Canada from West to East before calling Ottawa home.
The travel bug had bit Jon and Sharon, so retirement could not come soon enough. They spent the first decade of retirement at their first cottage home on Patterson Lake near Lanark, ON. Many family and friends flocked to the cottage with Jon spending many summer days giving pontoon boat rides around the lake and hosting countless bonfires at night. Never a fan of the cold, Jon and Sharon spent much of the last 10 winters in Mesa, Arizona. Jon loved the peace and serenity he found there, enjoying daily mountain bike rides and walks in the desert with his cherished dog, Susie, with whom he shared a very special bond.
Jon was so many things, a woodworker, repairman (that man could MacGyver just about anything!), encyclopedia (he knew something about everything), comedian (he took pride in putting the "dad" into "dad jokes"), athlete, amazing Dad (he raised his daughters to be strong and independent), best friend, teacher, advisor, and most of all Best Papa Ever to Olivia and Vera. He was on one-hand the mischievous and silly grandpa who dedicated himself to making sure they were always having fun and giving the best tackle-hugs and on the other hand, a quiet and supportive presence for them to talk to about anything. He would do anything for his girls including watching their TV shows (yikes!), attending their performances and even playing games when asked (that says a lot). He even taught them how to drive his ATV.
Jon was hardest on himself and had to be reminded of all the things we loved about him: his compassion, drive, courage, spontaneity, sense of adventure, willingness to share his toys (he loved anything with wheels!), commitment, generosity, ability to make you feel seen and special and most of all his hugs... he gave the very best hugs.
This doesn't begin to cover all the ways that Jon touched all of our lives. His passing has left a large hole; one that will be filled with the love we will forever have for him and the memories he made with us.
Jonny would not have wanted anyone to spend their hard earned money on him (he would be the first to say he was frugal), but if you wish, memorial donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at www.heartandstroke.ca .
Details on a Celebration of Life for Jon to come later.

I only knew Jon as an internet acquaintance (as "jonsobi"), a fellow van owner on fordtransitusaforum, where we, and many others, shared our experiences building out our camper vans, and, as we got them to varying stages of completion, using them. His joy in his projects, his traveling, his pup, his mountain biking, his wife, were all evident, even though we'd never met, and for the most part, didn't even know one anothers' names. I found some of those conversation threads recently, and was rereading, and came across a video Jon had posted from his google account, using his real name, which led me here. He'd been missing from the forum for a long time, so I'd wondered, but was saddened nonetheless. Very sad loss, for all who actually knew him, and even for those of us that didn't, really. I'd always hoped we might meet in real life (I'm in Boston, he was on Ottawa, it could have happened), but instead, I'll be sure and raise a glass with my wife during our cross-country van trip. We, along with our dog, are leaving in just a few hours.

My first encounter with Jonny was when I was dating his cousin Audrey, now my wife for 54yrs. Jonny was full of fun and mischief, a joy to be with. I also met him and his family when they lived in Arbroath before they emigrated to Canada. Arbroath was nearer to where I was based (RAF Leuchars) and thus closer to meet up (winch) my future wife. It was always fun and we'd all go walking along the shoreline stopping occasionally for an Arbroath Smokey.
Quite a few years ago Audrey & I visited Sharon & Jonny at their idealic cottage at Patterson Lake, it was the most enjoyable holiday we have ever had, sailing & fishing on the pontoon boat, swimming in the lake (Brrr) and getting my very first ride ever driving Jonny's ATV, (once I'd passed his test of course) what fun, a pity the holiday was over so fast.
Jonny will always be missed by Audrey & Myself, his sense on humour, his smile and so much more to many to mention.
RIP Jonny XX

What a fantastic brother, a lifelong relationship of laughter, honesty and trust. I idolized my big brother, my life was shaped and influenced by him greatly and I´m going to miss surprise bag checks, arm punching contests and full contact croquet at the old farm. Like they say at the cheese factory bro, yer grate!

Sharon and family: So sorry to learn of Jon's death. When Gavin introduced him as his brother from another mother, I knew he was special to him. We enjoyed your visit to NL so much, and because of Jon, I'm forever buying Paul Newman's dressings! We also had to go visit La Manche after his glowing account of you coming across it. I'm sure he'll leave a void in most of your lives. Remembered fondly by us! Wish you had the chance to visit us again! RIP

What a beautiful tribute to Jonny. Such a sweet guy, funny, smart and yes he had great hugs. He loved people and talking to them . The last mountain bike ride he and George did in Feb I think was split between chatting with all the other bikers and riding . If we had known that was the last time we were going to see him we would´ve held that hug much longer. Jonny you were one of the good ones and will leave a hole in so many lives but especially in Sharon´s and your girls. Thanks for your friendship and fireside chats.

He was so friendly, full of common sense, and knowlegeable, even if he did "only" have an Arts degree, as he liked to point out to his engineering colleagues while carrying out his duties at NDHQ.

Save a spot for me in the big HQ in the sky, Sobey.

Our condolences to Sharon, Angela, Paula and families. As Jon once told us, we introduced him to the Miller family 52 years ago and he did not regret a moment of that time. We imagine him still smiling.
