Robert Louks Obituary

April 17, 1940 - May 7, 2023
Passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Betty Louks (nee Lumsden). Loving father of Ann (Bob) Mayfield, Donna (Alex) Brodie, Karen Louks and the late John Louks. Proud grandfather of Whitney, Audrey and Evan Mayfield, Amy and Stephanie Chamberlain and Elliot and Paige Brodie. Bob was the proud great-grandfather of Matthew, Sarah, John-Henry Chamberlain and Lilianne Calabia. Loving brother to Fred and Tom. Predeceased by sister Linda Weir.
Bob's vast working career included his time as a journalist and editor at the Ottawa Citizen, and later as the Director of Communications for the Food Prices Review Board and the Prices and Incomes Commission. He felt the greatest accomplishment of his career was his more than 20 years as a devoted teacher/professor at Algonquin College, and was proud that he developed the Multimedia Department in collaboration with Carleton University.
Bob's family would like to thank Dr. Kifi, the staff at Bayshore Health Services, his nurse practioner Michelle Barone, and the staff at Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital for the excellent care and compassion as Bob's health began to decline.
There will be a Celebration of Life on Friday, May 19, 2023, from 1 - 3 p.m. at Blair & Son Funeral Home, Smiths Falls. A private graveside service for the family will take place at St. Francis de Sales Cemetery.
Bob will be most remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and was especially passionate about journalism and his dedication to his students.
If desired, memorial donations may be made to Perth & Smiths Falls District Hospital Foundation.

Bob was an old-school journalist. He was gruff and fearless. The crime reporting stories he told inspired me and shaped my career. You knew you had made it to the second-year when Bob acknowledged you by name as he passed you in the hall. Bob influenced and inspired many journalists over the years. Each story we write has a piece of Bob in it and each phrase we turn carries his legacy forward. As a journalism instructor, I pass on the rules he taught me. Many decades later, I still hear his voice, and I imagine I always will. RIP Bob, and thank you. You changed my life. My condolences to his family and friends.
