Glenn Armstrong Obituary

On October 3, 2023 after a lengthy battle with cancer, Coach Armstrong made his final touchdown.

Glenn was born in Windsor, ON in February 1950 to parents Jim and Margaret Armstrong. The family came to BC in 1952. Glenn enjoyed team sports from an early age and while in high school playing with the Surrey Rams, football became his passion.

Glenn earned his Bachelor's Degree in Education, Language Arts in 1976 at Simon Fraser University and began teaching at Barriere Elementary and then Dallas Elementary while coaching the Sahali Rams and Dallas Cowboys in minor football. Moving on to the next quarter, he tackled Valleyview which was, at the time, a Junior High school full of challenging teens.

In 1980, Glenn met widowed Judy Buckley and her two children, Jason, and Melanie. They married in 1985 and the family settled in the Dallas area. Glenn expanded his career with a Coaching Certification and coached football for many successful years at NorKam and then at Valleyview for the remainder of his career. During this time, he also earned his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Victoria.

Sidelined after knee surgery, Glenn retired from teaching in 2007 but continued to coach the Kamloops Broncos running backs for the 2008 season. He was honored to be awarded The Coaches Association of BC - Coach of the Year in 2007, and Coach of the Year as well as Community Coach of Excellence in 2008. He instructed many coaching courses and seminars throughout BC before fully retiring in 2014.

Glenn and Judy spent many happy years on their acreage in Del Oro, enjoying their dogs, goats, chickens and gardens. They frequently went on month-long camping adventures, taking their little trailer all over the province. Their love of camping and the outdoors continued until Glenn's illness in 2016.

Glenn was predeceased by both his parents. Left behind and missing him are his wife, Judy; her children Jason (Tracy) Buckley and Melanie Buckley; step-grandchildren Simon and Sabrina; as well as numerous friends and associates in the SD73 and junior football communities. Thanks to the amazing staff at Kamloops Hospice for their wonderfully supportive care of Glenn during his last days.

Thanks to Drs Ewart and MacDonald and staff at RIH Cancer Clinic and Dr. Raul and staff at KGH Cancer Clinic.

Dr. Paul Dickinson; you are an absolute gem of a human being. We are so grateful for your care and support of both Glenn and Judy over the past several years. Thank you from the whole family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kamloops Hospice in Glenn's memory.

No service will be held but a family get-together is planned.

I'm shocked to hear of Nr. Armstrong passing..I was in his grade 7 class of 1980? I think it was his first year at Dallas Elementary. He had only 8 girls in his class that year. I fondly remember his spelling mistakes, and his " Souper Teecher" tshirt.
Cancer is a nasty disease.
RIP Mr.Armstrong..

Coach Glenn was a significant influence in my Junior High days at Valley. Not only in the game of football. He was approachable and easy to talk with. So committed, he would pick me and other players up at our homes for 5am(ish) weight training at Golds Gym.
Thank you Coach.

So sad to hear this. My deepest sympathy to family. Glenn was a close friend through high school in White Rock and we enjoyed many good times together. Glenn was my best man at my wedding in 1971. Many touch football games together on fields in White Rock on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Memories of this gentle, kind man will always be with me. Glenn was a passionate colleague and dear friend during our many years at Valleyview. His love for football and his athletes was admirable. He would do anything to keep 'Football' alive and his efforts impacted so many young men and coaches.. The last time I spent time with Glenn was when, and because, he got me into the pool for physio after my knee replacement. I sure appreciated that advice from him. I cared, respected, and admired Glenn a great deal. I wish sincere and comforting thoughts to all of his family.

Coach Armstrong was a National Coaching Association , Theory and Technical Course Condustor. KenPurvis and Brian Olthuis spent the better part of a decade co - facilitating NCCP courses with Coach Armstrong. Glenn´s soft caring approach to training coaches belied the tough hard contact sport he excelled in. Many of us will remember Glenn as we move into our life´s quarters, enjoying every touchdown!

Very sad to hear this. He coached me at NorKam. One of the funniest stories was when we played a game at John Oliver High School in Vancouver and our dressing room got broken into and they stole my pants. Yes you heard correctly. So now I have to go home on the bus in my underwear but Coach Armstrong had an extra pair of shorts but they were too small for me so he took off his pants and gave them to me to wear. The pants just barely fit me as they were skin tight but better than nothing. So I wore his pants and he wore shots home and it was November so I think coach froze all the way home but that was the type of man he was. Not to mention an amazing coach

Glenn was one of the most caring people I knew. He taught me so much about reaching out to young people. A community leader who always wanted his players to have the safest equipment, he also spent much of his time encouraging his colleagues to become more qualified so they could become better teachers. A friend forever. He was a giant.

Coach Armstrong gave me a chance to play a sport I loved when there were no other opportunities to do so being a female. He allowed me join the guys team as the first girl, never made special allowances for me and continuously challenged me. I´ve always been grateful for the lessons I learned playing football and to Coach for giving me the chance. My deepest condolences to his family.
