Hayao Komori Obituary

Hayao (Art) Komori, born June 7, 1924, left this life December 12, 2021. The sixth child of Matsunosuke and Haru Komori, and the last to pass of his 12 siblings, Art leaves behind Connie, his wife of 66 years, daughter Teresa, son Don (wife Linda), and granddaughters Jane and Rachel. His sons Steven and Wesley predeceased him.

At 97 years of age, Art survived the Great Depression, separation from family for his formal education in Japan, war, internment, and the loss of many near and dear relatives and friends. A cook, photographer, carpenter, and farmer, through his various careers he kept moving forward following his own direction unconcerned about wealth or status. His skill as a ballroom dancer impressed and surprised all with his grace and form as he and Connie would whirl at speed around the floor. His artistic eye with camera and wood was unique. None could compare to the tomatoes and garlic from his garden. His home was his castle where he spent his time in the garden and workshop while also taking time to study Japanese philosophy and language. In the 1990s, Art's garden and rock sculptures attracted TV producers becoming featured in the series "Weird Homes".

With Connie's assistance, Art was able to live independently remaining active throughout his long and full life. He never compromised his views or values. He always spoke his mind. He savored family meals and took special joy in having his granddaughters nearby. In later years, Art and Connie enjoyed regular get-togethers with friends at the A&W. A humble man, in accordance with his firm wish no service will be held (please no koden or flowers). Those that knew him will hopefully honour and remember him as he was - a unique man of strong will and love of life.

The family thanks Dr. Peter Loland for his kind care. A special thanks to the Royal Inland Hospital staff who despite these trying times were all one could hope for.
