Ian Findlay Obituary

Ian Douglas Findlay

affectionately known as ?Doc?

Dr. Ian Douglas Findlay passed away peacefully April 20, 2010 surrounded by his family. Born at Cullen, Scotland, December 2, 1923, Ian graduated from the University of Aberdeen medical school in 1946. His inquisitive mind, friendly nature, integrity and dedication to family, work and community touched the many people he encountered during his career as a physician that spanned across 45 years and four continents. Whether as a colleague or brief acquaintance, Ian left a lasting impression that brought a smile to anyone?s face.

As a young doctor in the Royal Airforce, Ian nurtured his love of traveling and learning about other cultures, through a tour to far flung reaches of the British Empire like Ceylon and the Aden Protectorate. Following his military service Ian answered the call for physicians in Canada. It was here, as he traveled and worked his way west across the country from Newfoundland that Ian found his home, beneath the big skies and among the rivers, lakes, grasslands and mountains of Canada. In Smithers, B.C. Ian met the love of his life, Annie, forming a beautiful bond that would last 55 years. Ian and Annie were married in the south of France and spent 2 years working at a missionary hospital in Africa before eventually returning to Canada. In 1961 they settled with their young family in Kamloops where for the next 30 years Ian was a well known member of the local medical community, as public health officer between 1962 and 1970, as general practitioner with the Irving Clinic from 1971 to 1978, and later with the Workers Compensation Board where he retired in 1989. It was then that Ian and Annie were able to take up their love of travel again.

Ian brought a unique flare, energy and enthusiasm to whatever project he was involved with. He was passionate about the outdoors, loved hiking, canoeing and cross country skiing and he fostered an appreciation of the natural world among his family. He was well known for his vegetable garden and legendary raspberry patch. Ian was also a dedicated conservationist, playing a key role in the formation of Kenna Cartwright Park on Mt. Dufferin, a legacy that is enjoyed by many.

Ian is lovingly remembered by his wife Annie, children Cathie (Alex), Peter (Debbie), Anne-Marie (Bill) and Andrew (Lisa), and grandchildren Marie-Claire, Hannah, Alastair, Gabriel, Robin and Zola. The Findlay family would like to say a special thank you to the staff at Ponderosa for their compassionate and loving care in making Ian?s final years comfortable and peaceful.
