John Goodwein Obituary
John Goodwein
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, John Goodwein on July 2. Born in the Danube River Valley of Yugoslavia on November 26, 1926 dad came to Canada in 1928 and settled in Kamloops in 1929. Growing up first on Royal Avenue in North Kamloops and then at the corner of Tranquille Road and Singh Road in Brocklehurst dad loved Kamloops and had many stories to tell of the old days in the dirty thirties. One day, his mother convinced his father to give him money for shoes for the new school year. Flush with cash, dad took the horse and wagon into Kamloops and upon arriving downtown noticed a shiny new pair of skates in the store window. Needless to say his dad was not impressed when young John told him he wanted the skates more than shoes.
Dad was very community oriented. He was a minor hockey and baseball coach throughout the 1960?s, 70?s and into the 80?s somehow managing to cope with each new generation of kid. He also became an accomplished lawn bowler and had many new friends and fun times at the MacArthur Island club. Fishing was also a passion and there were many trips and stories of the one that got away on our local lakes.
Being community minded dad was very active in community service organizations. He joined the Moose Lodge in the 1960?s and spent many years working with that organization. Later he joined the Shriners, Masons, Army and Navy Club, the Eagles, and other organizations. He was also active in his church.
Predeceased by his parents, his brother Andy, his sister Katie and wife Mary, John leaves to mourn his passing, son Rick, daughters Jean (Gavin), Lynn, Bev and son John, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Dad was well loved by the community and had many friends and acquaintances. He lived live to the fullest and stayed independent until the last months of his life. A celebration of his life will occur on Wednesday, July 6 with a graveside service at Hillside Cemetery at 1:00 PM followed by a service at the Free Methodist Church 975 Windbreak Street in Brocklehurst at 2:00.
Special thanks to staff at Royal Inland Hospital
and Ponderosa Lodge for their care and support
during the last few months of Dad?s life.
