Paul Porter Obituary

On Sunday, August 2, 2020, Paul Sidney Porter passed away peacefully at hospice in Kamloops, BC.

Paul was born in 1952 in Vancouver, BC, son of Sid and Lil Porter. He was a beloved husband to Diana, devoted father to Julia (Chris) and Graham, loving granddad to Nolan, and supportive brother to Lesley.

Paul attended St. Anthony's Elementary and West Vancouver Secondary Schools. Paul received his degree in theatre and completed his teacher training at UBC. He moved to Kamloops to begin his career in 1977. In 1979 Paul and Diana began their married life together in Kamloops, where they taught in the Kamloops School District, and raised their two wonderful children.

Paul was a man of many interests. In his early days he was involved in theatre, while staying fit with cross country skiing, tennis and mountain biking. In his later years, Paul became very involved in technology and played guitar with his usual enthusiasm.

Paul will always be remembered for his solid loyalty, dry sense of humour and for being a trusted and devoted friend.

He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS Society of BC, or to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice would be much appreciated.

My deepest condolences to Paul's family and friends. I remember Paul very fondly from our UBC Theatre days. We did a scene together from Neil Simon's "Barefoot in the Park" and he was so good, so funny and so charming. Rest in peace, old Friend.

I am so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. He was a true friend and was there for me when I needed one. I will always remember him warmly and fondly for that. He also had a great sense of humour that helped us through some difficulties at work at Brock. He was also an excellent teacher who opened many students minds and imaginations through Drama. So long, Paul,. My world is a little bit lonelier now without you in it.

Very sad indeed to hear this. It was my pleasure to work with Paul twice during our teaching careers--first at Brock Junior and much later at Kam High. Condolences to the family, especially to Diana, Julia and Graham.

Deepest condolences to your family. Mr. Porter was my English and drama teacher at BJSS from 1978-1980. He impacted my life in such a huge way. He helped me believe that I could be good at something. He gave me my first A in school. He gave me my love for drama and theater. I have taught many of the drama games he taught us, to many children over the past 40 years. He impacted my life significantly! Praying for your family and so thankful for his influence in my life.

Dear Diana and family,
We are very sorry for your loss. Paul was an empathetic educator and colleague. It was great to know him through work as well as in the neighbourhood and at the boys’ soccer games.

Paul was a very good friend at West Van Secondary. I remember his obsession with reel to reel tape recorders, which provided him with the avenue to record and play an enormous selection of music for the gang that gathered at his place after school. I remember his love of acting and drama class. We lost touch over the years, but reconnected a few years ago and kept in touch over Messenger and FB. Paul was one of life’s good people. He had a strong sense of fairness and compassion. He was kind. I feel blessed to have been able to spend a half hour with Paul and Diana at their lovely home in July. His smile will remain with me always. My heart goes out to Diana and the kids.

When I was at Brock Junior High, Mr. Porter was one of the teachers who made the school a better place. His classes were creative spaces, and I always looked forward to seeing the students he coached performing at the coffee houses.

Rest in peace Paul. You were one of the finest teachers I have worked with - you taught me that people are the most important resource in any organization and that we always need to keep in mind that everyone has their own stuff that they are dealing with behind the scenes. Our schools need more people like you. I will miss you.

So sad to hear about Paul but thankful we were able to have a phone conversation a few weeks ago. Paul was a close friend during our high school years. Remember him as a person of great integrity and somebody I respected very much. My sincere condolences to Diana and her family.
