William Callaghan Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Bill Callaghan at the Burnaby General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

He is survived by his common-law wife Marie George, and his son Shane. He is also survived by his sisters Connie Inness, Sylvia Mazur, Karen Nagel (Ray) and several nieces and nephews.

Bill was pre-deceased by his parents Helen and Jim Callaghan and his son Ian.

Bill was born and raised in Kamloops, he attended Stuart Wood Elementary and Kamloops High School. He left Kamloops at an early age to join the Canadian Navy. He later returned to Kamloops and started working for the CPR where he stayed for several years. He went on to get his welder's ticket and started working as a welder/ironworker on many large projects in BC and in the oilfields in Northern Alberta. He was a member of the Ironworker's Union Local 97.

Bill made many friends during his lifetime and he will be missed by us all.

Rest in Peace Bill.

Billy--who knew when you bought me that W.Russian on New Years Eve--what was in store for us. I barely knew you.
The IronWorkers Anniversary was a Bash I'll never forget. Our trips to the Fishing Camps in Barkley Sound; Incredible. We are All going to Miss your Kibitzing; Storys' of your work and Friends. Like how many Books can a guy read in a lifetime? You were Insatiable. How you love Mexico.
Billy, your Sisters have been so supportive, especially Connie...she is a Rock.
your sickness was so quick, Wish we had more time.
I'll always be here for Shane-he knows that. You will always be close in my Heart, tears always follow.
I'll be raising a drink to you on your Birthdays--forevermore. Sending you a Bluebird Callaghan.
Love Marie xoxo

The first time i met Billy was when i moved in next door to him and Marie, this quiet tanned, dry humored man was leaning over the railing of their deck watching me seed a patch of grass, he said from his view it looked like the outline of a bear, Bill liked to tan and read on his deck, he always had a smile and a wave. I would see him on his return from his Mexico vacations, always tanned, smiling, and dressed neatly> Marie took wonderful care of Bill and made his time battling the awful disease of cancer as easy as possible. I loved talking to Billy about the navy, having been married to a navy man myself, days before his death he came out on the balcony and banged the pots and pans to pay homage to our health care teams, I could see he was tired, but always that spunk was there, Rest in Peace Billy. My heartfelt condolences to Marie and his family, forever I will see him smiling just the way he did when I first met him and Marie.

I first met Bill when I moved next door to him and Marie in burnaby, this smiling tanned man was leaning over the deck railing watching me plant a patch of lawn seed, he teased me saying from his view it looked like a bear, he had a quiet, dry sense of humor, always a wave and hello, he loved to sit on his deck sunning and reading. we talked about his navy life, and shared stories as i was married to a navy man, I liked Bill. His wife Marie took wonderful care of him and especially in his final weeks, I will always remember him on his return from Mexico vacations, tanned, smiling and always neatly dressed. Rest in peace Billy, you will never be forgotten. Condolences to Marie and family.

Billy was a great longtime friend of my father Elmer Sorocan.
I knew him most of my life and am very saddened by this news.
We were lucky to see him just weeks before his passing to have our last laughs and watch a game of golf together.
He will be greatly missed by my dad.
With love and condolences...

My exRobert Botting and myself knew Billy in Kamloops. in fact Bob got him into the Ironworkers. I am sorry to hear of his passing. My Bob passed in Sept. 1992 and a lot from that group that we knew are now gone so I am sure there is a reunion going on. The last time Billy phoned me, he was in Nelson. So it has been quite awhile.
My condolences to the family.
