BURKOWSKY Ethel Obituary
BURKOWSKY, Ethel April 26, 1942 - April 3, 2024 With sad emotions that the family announce that our mother, wife, sister, grandmother and great grand mother Ethel Burkowsky passed in Saskatoon, SK on Wednesday, April 3rd at the age of 81.Ethel was born in Kamsack, SK and to Anton and Annie (Dykun) Nayko. Ethel grew up on a farm south of Pelly, SK. While visiting her relatives on the correction line north of Pelly, SK, she became aware of dark haired, leather jacket wearing, boy named Frank. His parents ran the Poplar Bluff General Store. She would often walk over with her relatives to the store to see what Frank was up to… Fast forward to January 1960, Frank and Ethel got married. Frank and Ethel resided on a family farm in the RM of Livingstone, with first their daughter Karen, sons Darrel and Brian. Together they operated a family farm that included grain, beef and dairy cattle, pigs, chickens and even Shetland sheepdogs. Ethel loved her "show" chickens that included some with feathered feet and her many Bantam Roosters. Ethel was talented in the kitchen as she would prepare multi dishes for meals, always followed by an amazing dessert. Her flower gardens grew over her time on the farm as they included many rose bushes of all different colors. Her large vegetable garden was always impressive as we are sure McFayden Seeds would celebrate when her annual vegetable seed and rose bush order was placed. Ethel was challenged with Parkinson's in her 40s. But she did not let it slow her down. She operated the farm machinery that was required, she keep the family home in order and often hosted visitors. Every Saturday night the Ukrainian Dance Party would be turned up on the AM radio in their kitchen. Mom enjoyed following the royal family, including a respect for Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana. Ethel had a great sense of humor as she often laughed until she cried. Once all the kids were settled into professional careers in the big cities, Ethel and Frank decided to retire from the farm they loved. In 1999 Frank and Ethel retired to Pelly, SK and they made a move to the city of Saskatoon, SK in 2004. Their home in the Briarwood neighborhood in Saskatoon contained a large vegetable garden along with yes, Rose bushes of many colors. As their health care needs changed, Ethel was assisted by Home Care until she moved into Stensrud for her care requirements. The staff at Stensrud treated Ethel with care during her time there. She was always safe and caringly looked after including her final hours. Thank you to Rev Demczuk for visiting mom in her final days. Ethel was predeceased by her parents Anton and Annie and her husband Frank. Left to cherish and celebrate her life are her sister Olga (Kiwaluk), daughter Karen (Winkenweder) and Greg, son Darrel and Karen (Harris), grandchildren Amanda (Carson) and Chris, Dana (Fehr) and Peter, grandkids Leighton, Noel, River and son Brian and Megan (Smythe) and step grandchildren Addison, Allie and Evelyn Macie. Ethel requested a private family celebration of life. Her final resting spot will be at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon, SK, back together again with Frank. Take care of your loved ones in remembrance of how Ethel made this world a better place during her time with us.
