John Switzer Obituary

With deep sorrow the Switzer family announces the passing of John H Switzer, Q.C. John H Switzer, Q.C., was a visionary real estate developer, with early insight into mixed-use developments. Dad's developments incorporated residences, retail positions, parks, and even schools sometimes. He changed the landscape of Toronto, and his vision provided housing and workspaces for people across Toronto's economic spectrum. First and foremost, Switzer was known as a dedicated husband, father and grandfather; his light-hearted spirit continues to be an inspiration to his family.

Born January 31, 1931, Switzer was a rare gentleman of the old school, both charming and substantive, who set a good example but knew how to open a bottle of champagne.

Amongst his many activities and affiliations, Switzer was a Trustee at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Governor of University of Toronto's School of Law, active at the Farmer Memorial Baptist Church in Toronto and President of the Urban Development Institute. He had many passions, including art, music, theater, and history, interests he has fostered in both his immediate family and the communities he has patronized at large. However, many of his friends and colleagues will remember Switzer best for his out-sized personality, passion for travel, friendly banter and singing songs amongst friends and strangers.

Switzer is survived by his widow Ghislaine, sons David Grafton and John Harcourt Jr., daughters Victoria and Valerie, grandchildren Chantelle, Cassandra, Spencer and Allanna and many great-grandchildren. His invaluable support and insight throughout the years has been a rock to his family, and his wisdom, kindness, and love are qualities that we can all hope to emulate.

Just saw this Obit for Switz, and though it was inevitable, I am saddened and bereft.
John was such a delightful challenge: to be in his presence was a fine way to sharpen your intellect and senses.
And the songs...yes, a shared passion for music and planning.
Any classmate of Herman Turkstra´s and John´s at McMaster could tell tales. I only have a few.
Ave Atque Vale, Comrade.

We are stunned. Had a plan for a trip together in May. Met John 1989 Palm /beach when we were all involved with the International Piano Competition. Ten year later John traveled to France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria with us and there was a lot of singing in the car. Then he became partners for our wine buying trip to South Africa, and later visited us in California, Veuve Clicquot in hand, a One of a Kind man, will remember him with great love and affection.

Saddened to hear of John's passing. John and my father John and uncle David had a long successful collaboration of successful developments in Mississauga and Oakville. Although they didn't always agree they were able to work through their differences to the benefit of the projects and leave an incredible legacy of accomplishment. John was unique and greatly respected. Rest in peace.

All the best to the Switzer family, from a former choir mate of John's at Farmer. A very neat guy, much fun and bass, wasn't it? God bless.
