Steven ATKINS Obituary

With great sadness we announce that Steven James Atkins passed away peacefully at PRHC comforted by his family on Monday April 26, 2021. Steve unfortunately succumbed to breathing complications related to a long battle with lung cancer, but had been fortunate to be able to spend the last few weeks entertaining an almost endless stream of friends and family at his home. Steve is survived by his best friend and wife of 34 years Julie (Seabrook), his sons Luke (Jennie) and Benn (Emma), his daughter Nicola (Joel) and his granddaughter Layla as well as his brothers Doug (Denise), Joe (Vicki), Gord (Judy) and his sister Lori. To say Steve lived a full life would be quite an understatement. After leaving home at 16 to work outdoors in the Rockies for a few years, he returned to Peterborough and finished his education while trying a few career options before settling into the car business. In 1984 Steve became the dealer principal of Peterborough Hyundai and he later added the Subaru franchise to the growing family business. Steve built the two brands very successfully over the next 30 years before deciding to retire in 2014. Steve loved anything that moved and over the years collected an endless stream of cars, boats, snowmobiles and ATVs all of which he drove way too fast and way too often. An avid sportsman, Steve played competitive hockey all his life and loved nothing more than to play golf with his friends at area courses and down south. For sure Steve had lots of plans for the future and much to add to many peoples lives but we plan and God laughs. Steve knew his work hard play hard approach to life would have consequences, but he left it all on the field as the saying goes and in doing so, he made the lives of everyone he touched better, and that's a wonderful legacy. Due to Covid constraints, the family will plan an appropriate gathering for a later date.

I wasn't aware Steve had passed until now. I would like to extend my sympathies to Julie, Luke, Benn, Nicola & the Atkin's Family. I left Peterborough many years ago but my time with Peterborough Hyundai helped give me a good start to my career. Steve was a great Dealer Principle, a good boss, and kind. I remember with fondness my time working with him, Gord, and others.
My deepest condolences.

My deepest sympathies to the Atkins family, Steve was a great guy, gave me my start in the car business 20 years ago and was all business at work and great fun outside of it! Talked briefly a couple of months ago at Canadian tire still as upbeat and positive as ever. My condolences again to the family.

Where to start. Steve, Julie,Luke and Ben were such a big part of my life for many years. Our regular Thursday night summits with Steve and David McGee at my house became a mixture of genteel libations and a free flowing source of wisdom about business. I had the pleasure of watching his 2 boys (his pride and joy ) grow up with many family weekends at my cottage on Chandos Lake as well as snowmobiling at my hunt camp in Algonquin/Whitney. So many laughs and the best of memories one could ever have. God bless Steve and family.

Steve was a good friend and although we kind of drifted apart after college (busy lives), He is as much a part of my upbringing as family. We rented an apartment together on Water St. 42 years ago and what a year and summer it was. We grew up together at St. Theresa's school . you will be missed by many my friend - including me.

Julie, Luke, Benn and family - I am so saddened by your loss. Steve will be missed by all who knew him. He was always up for company or a good time. I have fond memories of him for over 40 years. He always made you feel welcomed, was generous, funny and a great host. His family was his pride and joy. They say when your time is up, its time to go, but hard to understand in this case. I am sure Steve had so much he wanted to do, places to go and people to see. Your memories will keep him in your heart and mind. My heart is heavy and my thoughts are with you.

Dear Julie, Lori, Joe, Doug, Gord & Families,

So saddening to see where that glow-worm-in-life Steve has passed. What a sparkler he was and what a businessman he was and what a gift to our negative world. Having taught a number of you and having worked with Lori, I know there is an air of nobility in your families and that spark was passed on from your parents. Few lived a better life than Steve and surrounded by family he undoubtedly left this world with peace and good cheer. Steve, I am giving you a 100% on your trip through life. Awesome.
