Brian Bowyer Obituary

BOWYER: Brian Bowyer 1930-2017. It is with sad regret to announce the passing of Brian Bowyer at 87 years due to complications with his lungs - his last days spent in hospital in Saskatoon. Brian leaves a legacy of music. Being a musician, a band leader, and conductor. Brian is survived by his loving children John, Sharon and her husband Brent & Jeffrey and his wife Elaine, and by his dedicated and loving wife Madelaine. His brother Gordon and two sisters Joyce and Berryl who live in the UK. As well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Brian is predeceased his first wife Joan - (mother of John, Sharon and Jeffrey) and second wife Martha, his youngest son Mark who died at age 9 in 1975 and also first born Lorraine, who died in infancy in 1953 and a younger sister Audry. Brians love and dedication to music came from his early home life as well as the British Army from 1948-1968. His family came to Canada in 1970 where they stayed for a year in Foam Lake - teaching music in school. Then three years in Outlook and six years in Humboldt, then teaching briefly in Quill Lake before moving to North Battleford in 1984 where he headed and conducted to City Kinsmen Band for several years. Then briefly teaching in Eston Sask. After his first wife, Joan died in 2001. Brian moved to Airdrie AB, where he was a musician in two bands. In July 2016, Brian remarried to a beautiful and loving wife Madelaine also a musician and recording artist. Brian had led a full and complete life and enjoyed games and activities, especially with his family. Brian is being painfully missed and will forever be lovingly remembered as a very caring and considerate human being. There will be no service as he had requested his body be donated to the University Hospital - Research Dept. __________________________________________________

It is with much sadness that I have discovered the passing away of Brian Bowyer, who was the perfect gentleman.
I was the band secretary and librarian with the Duke of Wellington's regiment, of which Brian was the Bandmaster.
I first met Brian (prior to my enlisting into the Army) at North East Essex Technical College Operatic Society's production of 'Iolanthe'. Brian was on oboe.
I was a self-taught struggling trombonist on the second desk. On the night of the performance, the 1st Trombone went off sick and I was literally sight reading 1st at a live performance.
Brian realised my nervousness and struggle and gave me a lot of encouragement.
At that time he was the Bandmaster of 1DWR and became involved with the local community. He encouraged me to sign on. I went to the Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, where my Professor of Trombone was Bill Teskey, Principal Trombone of the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Despite 'military discipline' life in the band with Brian was relaxed and enjoyable. He was a musician to his fingertips.
His wife was a lovely lady and the two of them would invite band members to their married quarters for Christmas.
I will always remember his arrangement of 'Rhapsody in Blue' for piano and military band, with Brian as the soloist.
So many fond memories! A truly decent gentleman. I offer my regards to all his family and friends.
Sincerely.

A talented a wonderful man and teacher. He was so dedicated to teaching music, and gracefully, taught us so much about life as well. Rest in peace, Mr. Bowyer. I am so thankful I had you in my life.

To Madeleine, John, Sharon and Brent, Jeff and Elaine, Joyce and Beryl, Gordon and all Brian's family- we were sad to learn of Brian's passing. We knew him from the Civic Orchestra. I sat beside him for many seasons. He always brought his best to rehearsals and performances. I appreciated how he always sought to improve on the bassoon year and after year with the same enthusiasm that a man much younger than him would've brought to it! I was honored to be able to attend Martha's memorial in Airdrie and felt grateful Brian had found another love, Madeleine, to share the rest of his life with. Take care, Brian will be missed!
