Paul HLADY Obituary

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Paul Hlady, on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at the age of 95. He is predeceased by his wife Dolores (nee Solomon) who passed on December 25, 2011. He was a very proud father to David Hlady, Joanne (Stephen) Clark, Janet (Stephen) Bray of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and Theresa DeRose of Buffalo, New York. Loving grandfather to his grandchildren; Alana Hlady, John (Emina) Hlady, Serena Clark, Cara DeRose, and Petra DeRose. Paul is survived by his two sisters, Elaine McEwen and Edna (Yantoshka) Zurbuchen, both of B.C., as well as many nieces and nephews. The second eldest of eight children born to John and Anne (nee Letwin) Hlady in Thalberg, Manitoba. He was born in 1927 on a farm and loved telling stories about his adventures and the fun he had with his siblings, relatives, and friends. Leaving Manitoba in 1952, Paul came to Niagara Falls and worked in the construction of the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station. He attended St. Patrick's Catholic Church regularly and St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church when he could. Paul met Dolores at a dance and they later married in 1956. The same year he began a new career as a barber on Queen Street in downtown Niagara Falls. He relocated to the corner of Simcoe Street and St. Clair in 1971. Known as 'Paul the Barber', he loved cutting hair, talking, and meeting people up until his retirement in 2004. After retirement, he continued cutting hair in people's residences, retirement and nursing homes. He played slo-pitch as a pitcher for many years and on days off work Paul enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, playing golf (he was a member of the Royal Tees), and enjoyed playing and seeing relatives in the Annual Dennis Letwin Memorial Golf Tournament, wearing their green jacket in 2018. Paul looked forward to his annual trips back to Manitoba to see family and friends. The family would like to thank the HNHB for their quick support, and a special thank you to nurses Olivia and Pretty as well as the attending PSWs. Thanks also goes out to Tanis of Hospice Niagara for the compassion that was shown to him in his last few days, and to the RNR Patient Transport Services attendants who treated our Dad with gentleness and dignity. Friends are invited to join the family at the PATTERSON FUNERAL HOME, 6062 Main St., Niagara Falls, visiting Tuesday, January 31, 2023, from 9 to 11 a.m. A Funeral Service in celebration of his life will take place at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rite of Committal to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Paul was a very very special brother and friend. He made everyone he met feel special. He was great fun to golf with and a joy to listen to his endless stories. In our phone calls I would always ask "how are you Paul", and his response was always "ya syl´nyy yak Kin´ " - translate to English from Ukrainian - "I´m strong as a horse". Paul, I am sad beyond words that you have left us. Gone but never ever forgotten!
Hugs from Yantoshka.

Condolences from the Campbell family, we knew Paul (and Pete) from living on Queen Street in the 60's, then we worked across the street from Paul's shop corner St. Clair and Simcoe Street. Always smiling and waving to all who passed his storefront. Godspeed 'Paul the Barber'

So very sorry to hear of Paul's passing. Everyone new him on St. Clair ave. Joanne and I went to NFCVI together and Paul talked about all of his children at the barbershop. He loved his family dearly. I can't believe he is gone. I met him not long ago at a restaurant near St. Pat's. I was so glad to have this opportunity to talk and reminisce. RIP Joanne Gallagher Radulovich.
