Steve Szabo Obituary

Peacefully passed away at the Welland Hospital on Friday, April 9, 2021 at the age of 84. He is reunited with his beloved wife Marika Elizabeth Szabo (1995) Loving father of sons Steve (Lilianne) and Les (Lee-Anne) Szabo. Cherished grandfather of Daniel, Luke and Logan. He is survived by his children and grandchildren and leaves many fond memories for his family in Canada, the United States and Hungary. Steve loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was there to help anyone and willing to give his time in a heartbeat. He was a major influence in development of soccer in the Niagara Region from the 1960's-1990's and earned a place on the Welland Sports Wall of Fame. From the 1970's-1980's he was a soccer official for the North American Soccer League, N.A.S.L. Steve was honoured to be an Olympic Torch bearer for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Steve was proud of his involvement in his community, his gardening as his past time but most importantly his family. Due to COVID restriction, private arrangements have taken place. A good man passed, a great contributor to soccer, his role as a referee was outstanding.

My condolences to Steve's family. I met him briefly in the Woolcott wing as he was my father's roommate in March. He was such a sweet soul and I enjoyed listening to his stories. I remember Steve praying for my dad on the night he passed. He really touched my heart. May he rest in peace.

I have fond memories of Mr. Szabo especially with respect to soccer as a coach and referee. I will remember him on and off the field. He was also one of my dad's best friends. My sincere condolences to the family for your loss.
